Transformers: Age of Extinction has held on to the number one spot at the North American box office on an unusually quiet 4 July weekend. It took $36.4m (£26.7m), trouncing Melissa McCarthy's latest comedy, Tammy, which took $21.2m (£15.6m). "This ranks as one of the lowest fourth of Julys ever," said Paul Dergarabedian, from box-office tracker Rentrak. Takings were down 44 per cent compared to last year. US Independence Day weekend is traditionally marked by the release of "tentpole" movies - from Back to the Future to Terminator 2 and Men In Black. Last year's major release was animation Despicable Me 2, which went on to take $368m (£214m), making it the fourth-biggest movie of the year in the US. But this year, there was no major release to coincide with the holiday. Michael Bay's Transformers, the fourth in the series, has a cast led by Mark Wahlberg.

More than 60 women and girls are reported to have escaped from the Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram, security sources say. They were among 68 abducted last month near the town of Damboa in north-eastern Borno state. Reports say the women escaped when the militants went to attack a military base near Damboa on Friday. The Nigerian military said it killed more than 50 rebels in a clash that night. Boko Haram is still holding more than 200 schoolgirls abducted in April. Local vigilante Abbas Gava told journalists he had "received an alert from my colleagues... that about 63 of the abducted women and girls had made it back home". "They took the bold step when their abductors moved out to carry out an operation," he said. A high-level security source in the state capital Maiduguri confirmed the escape, AFP news agency reported.

In preparation for the 2014 Christian Pilgrimage Exercise, the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) has embarked on vigorous sensitization drive to the States. The Executive Secretary of NCPC, Mr. John Kennedy Opara and his Federal Commissioners were at Lafia, Nasarawa State Capital on 1st July, 2014 where he solicited the support of Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura in the sponsorship of Christians to the holy Land this year. The NCPC Boss thanked the Governor immensely for sponsoring 238 Nasarawa Pilgrims to the Holy Land last year. He equally thanked him for approving the participation of his deputy in last year’s Presidential Pilgrimage. He commended the Governor for the visible transformation recorded in the state, especially in the areas of Agriculture and Education, stressing that he was leaving an enduring legacy for the people of the state.

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), has approved 77 movies including the controversial screen adaptation of Chimamanda Adichie’s book, Half of A Yellow Sun, directed by Biyi . According to the Board’s Corporate Affairs representative, Caesar Kagho, the film which stars Academy Awards nominee, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Hollywood star, Thandie Newton and A list Nollywood actors, has been approved for viewership in Nigeria and rated “18″. “All approved movies fulfilled the regulatory conditions stipulated by the NFVCB,” Mr Kagho said. This approval is coming days after producers of the movie enlisted it for  online viewing in the United States of America. Castro H iplif e   Musician,   Castro   is feared dead after reportedly drowning in a Jet Ski accident in Ada. He is reported to have drowned in a jet ski accident in Ada on Sunday. Reports say the celebrated and award-winning Ghanaian musician was trying to save a female friend from drowning when he drowned. According to eyewitnesses, Castro together with the Captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan and three others were on a weekend trip. The group reportedly rented jet skis and went on the water where the unfortunate accident occurred. Gyan and Castro have collaborated on a number of award-winning hit songs in Ghana. Asamoah Gyan owns Baby Jet Promotions, which is the label Castro works under. They have been friends for over 10 years.

It has emerged that Commanding Officer of 101 Reserve Battalion, Damboa, Borno State, Colonel Abubakar Shonba was among the soldiers killed in the weekend attack on the battalion by Boko Haram insurgents. The Battalion is just about a year old, and reports directly to the Army headquarters in Abuja. Boko Haram terrorists had in an attack which began on Friday, spilling to Saturday, bombarded Damboa, home to the elite 101 Battalion, destroying everything in their path. Director of Defence Information (DDI), Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade at the weekend confirmed that five soldiers and a senior officer died while repelling the attack. Olukolade, who didn’t disclose the identity of the “senior officer”, however said the attack was successfully repelled by the troops. He said the attack happened when most of the soldiers were out on patrol, but that a large cache of arms and ammunition were recovered by an army patrol team.

Raju the elephant was beaten, abused and forced to go hungry until animal charity workers rescued him last week   For 50 years Raju the elephant was held in chains, beaten and abused – a pitiful site with his legs bleeding from spiked shackles and living on ­handouts from passing tourists, writes Sarah Arnold in the  Sunday People. He was so hungry he would eat plastic and paper to fill his empty stomach. But last week  animal  charity workers swooped to save him in a daring midnight rescue ­operation on the streets of India. Some experts believe  elephants  cry when overcome with emotion, just like humans. And Raju’s rescuers insist the giant animal wept as he realised his ordeal was coming to an end.

Hundreds of Nigerians in Chicago in the U.S. on Saturday held a solidarity rally, demanding that the terror group, Boko Haram, unconditionally release the schoolgirls abducted in Chibok, Borno. Over 200 girls were abducted from their school in Chibok on April 14. The Nigerians, during the rally, also demanded greater U.S. support for the Federal Government in its war against Boko Haram. The rally titled #unitedagainstbokoHaram:#bringbackourgirls was also organised in Atlanta, Dallas, Greenville SC, Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC, Windsor Canada and Belmopan Belize. Participants at the rally carried placards with inscriptions such as "Nigeria needs support to fight terrorism’’ and "Stop Boko Haram".
