You can’t release Dasuki from detention, FG tells ECOWAS court

The Federal Government, yesterday, challenged the powers of the Court of Justice for the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, to compel it to release the erstwhile National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Gazalli, maintained that ECOWAS court was bereft of the requisite jurisdiction to entertain the fundamental rights enforcement suit the former NSA lodged before it. It told the court that Dasuki was facing multiple criminal charges bordering on corruption and economic sabotage, insisting that his continued detention was not in disobedience of any legal pronouncement.

Photo: Saheed Olugbon Hundreds of admission seekers to the nation’s tertiary institutions and their parents on Tuesday stormed the Lagos State Governor’s Office in Alausa, Ikeja, and the state Assembly complex to protest against alleged manipulation of the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. The protesters demanded the cancellation of the exams and the removal of the Registrar of the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde.

Nigerians in diaspora may vote in 2019 —Buhari

  President Muhammadu Buhari has stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, would be encouraged to explore the possibility of Nigerians resident abroad voting in the 2019 general elections. Buhari Buhari He also said his government would be merciless and relentless in its anti-corruption war.  Buhari stated these in Malabo, the capital city of Equatorial Guinea, during a meeting with the Nigerian community in the country, where he was on a state visit. Responding to a request of Nigerians to be given a voting right abroad during national elections in Nigeria, President Buhari, who sympathized with them, said: “I want all Nigerians to know that I respect them and their right to choose their leaders.”

N45.9bn fraud: Tompolo seeks change of judge

Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo A former Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, has urged the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal to order Justice Ibrahim Buba of a Federal High Court in Lagos to withdraw from the fraud charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The EFCC charged Tompolo and nine others with an alleged fraud of N45.9bn before Justice Buba. One of his counsel, Mr. Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, said in a statement on Tuesday that his client had since last Friday filed his appellant’s brief of argument before the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal.

Bus blast kills at least 16 in Pakistan's PeshawarAgencies

PESHAWAR: At least 16 people, including three women, were killed and over 30 others injured on Wednesday when a powerful bomb ripped through a bus carrying government employees in this restive northwestern Pakistani city. The blast took place as a bomb placed inside the bus exploded when the vehicle packed with government employees reached Peshawar from Mardan. The bomb exploded when the private bus was on Sunehri Masjid Road as it was taking civil secretariat employees for duty.
