Donald Trump will receive first intelligence briefing Wednesday

Image
Donald Trump will receive his first intelligence briefing on Wednesday, officials familiar with the matter tell CBS News. The briefing is expected to be at a secure facility at the FBI in New York, likely at 26 Federal Plaza. The CIA indicated in May that the intelligence briefings for the nominees of each party would begin after the nominating conventions in July. The practice of briefing the nominees dates back to Harry Truman, who learned 12 days into his own presidency that the U.S. was working on the Manhattan Project. In 1952, he decided candidates should be given the option of receiving the briefings. Two killed in anti-government protest in eastern Congo

Image
A civilian and a police officer were killed in clashes in northeast Congo on Wednesday, police said, during a protest at government failure to stop massacres of civilians by rebel groups. The protests in the town of Beni added to tensions in Democratic Republic of Congo ahead of an election set for November in which the opposition has called for President Joseph Kabila to step down after his allotted two terms. Crowds jeered Prime Minister Augustin Matata Ponyo and two ministers on Tuesday when they came to assess security. On Wednesday, residents of Beni and surrounding towns again chanted against the government and army outside the mayor's office, voicing frustration in a region once considered a political stronghold for the government. In the latest incident, around 50 were killed by suspected Ugandan rebels on the outskirts of Beni on Saturday. More than 700 people have died in similar attacks on civilians since 2014. The government blames the attacks on the Allie...

The Cracked Integrity Of Donald Trump

Image
You have to say this for the crooked demagogues and reactionary populists of the American past: they may have stirred the bitter soup of nativist resentment with as much zeal as Donald J. Trump, but their family counselors did not take time out from politics to cruise the Aegean on a plutocrat’s yacht; their rhetorical counselors did not attempt, for decades, to instill fear in their employees through the most squalid sort of sexual terror; and their political counselors never worked in the interest of Slavic autocrats. Oh, Father Coughlin, we hardly knew ye! Day by day, news bulletin by news bulletin, the Trump campaign spirals to new depths of strategic confusion and moral chaos. On the escalators at Trump Tower, the direction is always down, down, down. At the center of the campaign is Trump himself, and, summoning the spirit of Sinatra’s most irritating song , he has made it clear that he will win or lose by doing it his way, by refusing to “pivot” or blandify his message...

Congress receives FBI material on Hillary Clinton emails

Image
Just after Hillary Clinton asked her supporters in Philadelphia not to get “complacent” despite her recent bump in the polls, the House Government Oversight and Reform Committee said Tuesday that the FBI had handed over documents related to their investigation into Clinton and her private email server. Clinton had no comment, and her campaign is asking for the notes from her interview with the FBI to be made public. A spokeswoman for the Republican-led House oversight panel said staff is reviewing documents that are classified as secret. Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, said in a statement that the panel received “FBI witness interview reports, including that of Secretary Clinton’s interview, along with other materials from the FBI’s now closed investigative file.” The FBI last month closed its yearlong probe into whether Clinton and her aides mishandled sensitive information that flowed through a private email server located in the basem...

Trump: Clinton is a bigot

Image
WEST BEND, Wis. --  Donald Trump called Hillary Clinton a bigot in a speech Tuesday night and accused his Democratic rival for the presidency of pandering to “communities of color.” “We reject the bigotry of Hillary Clinton, which panders to and talks down to communities of color and sees them only as votes,” Trump said. “That’s all they care about. Not as individual human beings, worthy of a better future. They have taken advantage.” It was an unfamiliar sight indeed for a Trump rally, seeing him reading off teleprompters, after months of mocking Clinton for using one at her rallies. In West Bend, in a packed building on a fairgrounds, Trump made his most distinct pitch to African-Americans to date, titling the speech “Creating a New and Better Future For America’s Inner Cities.” However, the optics might have been a bit awkward, given that the audience was almost entirely devoid of minorities. “The Democratic Party has taken the votes of African-American for granted...

I am Mohammad.” Also on Monday in the Bronx, a Persian Jew found the word “Nazi” scrawled on his Mercedes van. Read the Original

Trump shakes up his team hiring website boss as CEO and pollster as his campaign manager as his ratings sag

Image
Donald Trump has rejigged his campaign team in a bid to counter plunging poll numbers by appointing a new CEO and promoting his pollster to campaign manager. Trump announced the introduction of the former Breitbart News boss Stephen Bannon as the campaign's CEO. He also confirmed Kellyanne Conway had been promoted from pollster to campaign manager. With 82 days to the election, sections of the Trump organization have expressed concern about the direction of the campaign. The business mogul described Bannon and Conway as 'big people' who would help him defeat Hillary Clinton in November's election. 'I've known both of them for a long time. They're terrific people, they're winners, they're champs, and we need to win it,' said the billionaire real estate mogul. Campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who formally took over the reins following the departure of Corey Lewandowski in June, will maintain his current title, Trump said. Mana...

An Oklahoma man is accused of killing his Lebanese neighbor after tormenting his family for years and calling them “dirty Arabs.” Vernon Majors faces murder charges for the shooting of Khalid Jabara, 37, on Friday night, minutes after police had left the victim’s home in Tulsa. The Jabara family says that they have been targeted for years by their 61-year-old neighbor, who would called them “filthy Lebanese” and “Aye-rabs” as well as insulting Hispanic neighbors. Majors faces a trial on assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly running over Khalid’s mother Haifa Jabara with his car in September. He bonded out of jail in May despite opposition from prosecutors, with what the Jabara family says was “No ankle monitor, no drug/alcohol testing, nothing.” Both Haifa and Khalid Jabara had protective orders against Majors, according to KOKI. Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane, escorted by members of her security team, prepares to leave the Montgomery County Courthouse and await a verdict Monday in Norristown, Pa. (Ed Hille/AP) Ultimately, the 50-year-old Kane was undone by what prosecutors portrayed as a personal vendetta for her critics. Now, she’s facing jail time and has had her law license suspended. ...

Turkey's Jason Bourne will take on military coup in upcoming blockbuster

Image
The Valley of the Wolves is a popular but controversial franchise in Turkey. Turkey’s wildly popular political thriller drama, likened to Western action series such as James Bond and Jason Bourne, is going to take on the events of last month’s coup in its next instalment, the company behind it announced on  Twitter . The failed coup saw a faction of the Turkish military attempt to topple the government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in one of the most openly volatile situations in Turkish politics in over a decade. The reasons for the coup remain a point of contention - the government has blamed ally-turned-foe cleric Fethullah Gulen, although he denies having the intention or means to do it. The coup attempt and deaths of over 200 people on the streets of Ankara and Istanbul during clashes has triggered a huge crackdown on suspected accomplices across all state services. Now Turkey’s Valley of the Wolves thriller series, which has captivated audiences on the small and ...

Russia uses Iran base for Syrian bombing raids for first time

Image
Move helps air strikes against Isis and rebels and underscores ties between Assad allies Russia used Iran as a base from which to launch air strikes against Syrian militants for the first time on Tuesday, widening its air campaign in Syria and deepening its involvement in the Middle East. In a move underscoring Moscow’s increasingly close ties with Tehran, long-range Russian Tupolev-22M3 bombers and Sukhoi-34 fighter bombers used Iran’s Hamadan air base to strike a range of targets in Syria. It was the first time Russia has used the territory of another nation, apart from Syria itself, to launch such strikes since the Kremlin launched a bombing campaign to support Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in September last year. It was also thought to be the first time that Iran has allowed a foreign power to use its territory for military operations since the 1979 Islamic revolution. The Iranian deployment will boost Russia’s image as a central player in the Middle East and allow the Russian ...

Rudy Giuliani forgets about 9/11 and claims that ‘before Obama came along, we didn't have any successful radical Islamic terrorist attack inside the’ U.S.

Image
You might want to get that bump on your head checked, Rudy. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani on Monday appeared to forget about the worst-ever terror attack to occur on U.S. soil, claiming that there simply had been no such assaults inside America before President Obama. “Under those eight years, before Obama came along, we didn't have any successful radical Islamic terrorist attack inside the United States,” Giuliani said during a head-scratching speech to introduce Donald Trump in Youngstown, Ohio. “They all started when Clinton and Obama got into office,” Giuliani said, bizarrely forgetting the horrific 9/11 attacks. The extraordinary exclusion of 9/11 was especially peculiar, given that, just a moment earlier Giuliani had been discussing the attacks and praising vice presidential nominee Mike Pence for a “very, very timely” visit to Ground Zero and for his help, as a then-congressman, on the Judiciary Committee to help “fashion the Patriot Act.” Rudy Giu...
