The House of Representatives on Tuesday described as disturbing, the high number of lawmakers, who failed to win the primaries of their various political parties. “The high turnover is the bane of the development of our parliament,” the House spokesman, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, told The PUNCH. Findings by The PUNCH showed that over 150 members of the House did not make it in the primaries. Investigations revealed that while a “negligible” number won the ticket of their parties to contest either a Senate seat or a governorship seat, the majority of the over 150 lost the primaries. Among the few, who won to contest other offices in 2015 are the Speaker, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, who would be contesting the governorship seat in Sokoto State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, and his Deputy, Mr. Emeka Ihedioha, who won the Imo State PDP governorship ticket.

Nearly a year after his daughter, Iyabo, wrote a well-publicised open letter to him, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has replied her, alleging that she was induced by President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration to write the stinker. In portions of his latest memoirs, My Watch, seen in advance by TheCable, Obasanjo said he had been warned that “this administration” was attempting to induce two of his daughters to do a “dirty job” and that he warned both of them against it. Obasanjo said Iyabo succumbed to the advances because of “her character” and “the influence of her mother” – who is the retired general’s first wife. In her letter, Iyabo, a former commissioner in Ogun state and former senator, recounted Obasanjo’s failings as a father and questioned his moral right to criticise others. “This is the end of my communication with you for life. I pray Nigeria survives your continual intervention in its affairs,” she wrote.

In his latest book titled My Watch scheduled to be launched in Lagos this morning, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has chronicled the genesis of the uneasy relationship between him and his former deputy, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as well as how his aides planted moles within Atiku’s camp to monitor him. Obasanjo, who denied ever seeking Third Term in office, blamed Atiku for what he described as a campaign of calumny against him on the issue after buying up the media. Revealing details of their private conversations at different times, Obasanjo also traced the ascension to power of President Goodluck Jonathan and the compromise deal that was struck for him (Jonathan) to spend only one term in office. He said it would be dishonourable for the president to now go back on that promise by contesting the 2015 presidential election.

This was contained in a statement issued on December 9, 2014, Tuesday, by the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh. Metuh, who stated this at a press conference at the party’s Abuja national secretariat, said the debate will focus on a wide range of issues affecting the country, adding that the President would be ready for the APC candidate after the ratification of his candidacy on Thursday. He further revealed that 3,073 delegates are expected to participate in the PDP convention where the President’s sole candidacy is expected to be sealed.

A federal autopsy carried out on late teenager Michael Brown has revealed that he died from gunshot wounds from officer Darren Wilson, and ruled his death a homicide. NBC News said the findings of the autopsy was similar two previous autopsies carried out by St. Louis County’s medical examiner and a private examiner hired by the Brown family. Brown suffered “severe injuries of the skull, brain and right chest” and appeared to have been shot in the hand at close range. “The manner of death is homicide,” the Justice Department’s medical examiner ruled. The release came from the St. Louis Prosecutor’s office on Monday. Witness interviews conducted by federal authorities and audio recordings of police transmissions leading up to and following the shooting were also released.

A police officer attached to the Ikoyi Police station has been accused of physically assaulting a couple, 29yr old photographer, Ejeh Smith, and his wife, Grace, 26. The couple said the policeman, identified as Dada Ogunsanya attacked them with his rifle along the Lekki Roundabout on Wednesday December 3rd. According to Punch , the couple who are currently receiving treatment at a Lagos Hospital for wounds they sustained from the attack, said they were in a taxi on their way to their Parkview home when a 7-man Police patrol team at the Lekki Roundabout stopped their taxi. Narrating what transpired, the driver of the taxi, Ndubuisi Iheaka said the police asked to inspect his boot which he obliged and opened for them. He said they then demanded for his drivers license and as he was about getting it for them, they flashed their lights on his passengers
