Enrique signs Barca deal

Image
Former Barcelona player Luis Enrique signed a two-year contract to become coach on Wednesday, a hire the club hopes will resemble the success stories of Johan Cruyff and Pep Guardiola. Enrique signed the deal with club president Josep Bartomeu two days after it was announced by the club. That was two days after coach Gerardo Martino stepped down when Barcelona finished its first season without a major trophy in six years. "It's a very special day for me. We believe that this is the beginning of a new Barcelona, a Barcelona that will excite again," Enrique said. "I can't wait to hear the hymn of Barcelona in the Camp Nou." The 44-year-old Enrique won two league titles as a Barcelona player from 1996-2004 and coached its B team from 2008-11. He also coached at Roma, and led Celta Vigo to a respectable ninth-place finish this season after installing an attractive passing attack on the Barcelona model. Enrique's hiring continues a tradition of in-house co...

Christian, Muslim leaders unite in terror condemnation

Christian and Muslim leaders expressed sorrow and sent their condolences to the victims of the recent bombings in Jos. The blasts left more than 100 people dead in a series of terror attacks that have hit the country. Rev Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), and Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad of Jordan, chairman of the Royal Aal Al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought (RABIIT), condemned the violence. “We strongly condemn the recent bombings in Jos, Nigeria. The location and timing of the bombings clearly were designed to cause indiscriminate and widespread casualties among passers-by, and among rescue workers who were coming to their aid,” read a joint statement. Both religious leaders, who were in Jos and Plateau State in 2012 leading a Christian-Muslim delegation in Nigeria, stressed that the horrific acts which have occurred in Jos did not represent in any way either of their two religions. “They have made us even more determined to fin...

Residents of Ajegunle area of Lagos were, yesterday, thrown into shock, after a bird was said to have transformed into an old woman who confessed to being a witch. The dark-complexioned nonagenarian with tribal marks, who spoke in Yoruba, told a bewildered crowd that she was on her way back to Ibadan, Oyo State (as a bird) when she missed her track. She was also said to have told the mammoth crowd that her mystical powers disappointed her because it was dawn. Eye-witnesses told  Vanguard  that three black birds were seen at about 7am, flying side‑by‑side along Old Ojo Road. Then, all of a sudden, one of them landed on a moving pick‑up van owned by Eko Electricity Distribution Company. An eye witness who identified himself simply as Mr Okafor said: “Immediately the bird landed on the van, it transformed into an old woman. “Everyone ran away at first but we later gathered round the woman only to discover that she had a bruise on her forehead with which she landed. ...
