Unlikely as it may seem, the pair have discussed the possibility of working together, and the Heart of Glass legend says she is a fan of his work
Kanye sing with me? Debbie wants to join up with the rap superstarThis could be the greatest collaboration ever. Blondie’s Debbie Harry reveals that she and Kanye West have chatted about working together. Amazing.
Offering her highest praise, Debbie says: “I spoke to him on the phone and he seemed so normal and easy to talk to. He didn’t seem like a jerk at all.”
The Heart of Glass legend, 69, is genuinely a huge fan of Kanye’s work.
“Ever since he did the rap song for a cartoon,” she says, seemingly referring to his 2009 recording for Family Guy spin-off The Cleveland Show.
“It was so cool, funny and smart,” adds the Rapture singer. “It was a silly, ridiculous refrain and Kanye made it cool. No Church in the Wild is insanely great, too.
“It was Anna Wintour who put us together.”
Debbie, and Blondie co-founder Chris Stein, were speaking as they launched the photo exhibition and book, Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie and the Advent of Punk, at London’s Somerset House, where Chris, 64, revealed he is also a fan of Kanye’s work.
He says: “I was surprised about how chilled and nice he was, because I didn’t know what to expect from him. He was a lovely guy.
“I listen to the Watch The Throne record frequently and we talked potentially about doing something with him.”
The singer previously said she had a “moral duty” to decline the invitation in protest at Russia’s anti-gay laws.
She says: “I think that culture is in trouble. I was disappointed about the whole situation, because it was so immature.
“I don’t know if they’d have us back. The promoters that we worked with the two previous times we played there was terrific and I think she would have us back.
“But I don’t know if there would be resistance from the government.”
