Sam Smith's In The Lonely Hour Goes Platinum In U.S.

Sam Smith has been given new reason to celebrate after U.S. sales of his debut album In The Lonely Hour passed the one million mark.

The British soul sensation's first record becomes only the third release this year (14) to sell more than a million copies Stateside after shifting 60,000 units last week (ends14Dec14) to rack up total sales to date of 1.05 million.

Only the Frozen soundtrack (3.4 million) and Taylor Swift's 1989 (three million) album have achieved the feat in the past 12 months.

The good news emerges 11 days after Smith racked up six Grammy Award nominations, including a nod for Album of the Year, for the 2015 ceremony.
