CAF To Name AFCON 2017 Host Today
The Confederation of African Football’s executive committee will on Wednesday decide the hosts for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
AFCON 2015 runners-up Ghana, 2012 co-hosts Gabon and 1990 title winners Algeria are the three countries vying to take over hosting rights from Libya, who withdrew themselves last year due to the civil war currently happening in the country.Representatives from all three candidates have since moved to deliver last-minute presentations to the voting committee, who will make their final decision this week.
Gabon Football Federation president Pierre-Alain Mounguengui, who saw the nation play joint-hosts with Equatorial Guinea in 2012, said: “We are up against some tough contenders but we think we have a good chance.”
The 2015 event was staged in Equatorial Guinea, where the Ivory Coast eventually lifted the trophy after seeing off Ghana in the final in February.
