Liverpool and Manchester United scuppered by swift £11m Roma deal
LIVERPOOL have lost out in their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain full-back Lucas Digne in a blow that could have knock-on affects for Manchester United.
The Reds were reportedly keen on left-back Digne, 22, who has been sidelined at PSG this summer.
Manager Brendan Rodgers is seeking further defensive recruits, having overseen three clean sheets at the start of Liverpool's Premier League campaign.
But Roma have swooped in and agreed a one-year loan deal for Frenchman Digne worth £1.1million, claim Gazzetta dello Sport.
And the move is a further blow to Liverpool's rivals United.
For the Red Devils now look set to miss out on Fabio Coentrao's signing from Real Madrid as PSG make room for the arrival.
Coentrao, 27, is reportedly free to leave the Bernabeu as new manager Rafael Benitez makes changes ahead of transfer deadline day.
The Portugal international is understood to have been on United's radar, with the club having already failed to sign Madrid defenders Sergio Ramos and Pepe this term.
But Ligue 1 champions PSG are expected to sign up Coentrao by the end of the week, while they will receive a reported £11m from Roma if the Digne deal is made permanent.
