Liverpool FC greats Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez help set attendance record in the United States
Suarez scores in 2-1 Barcelona victory as former team-mates are reunited
Luis Suarez got himself on the scoresheet as he was reunited with his former Liverpool FC team-mate Steven Gerrard in Los Angeles.
The two met as Suarez’s Barcelona took on Gerrard’s new side, LA Galaxy, in a pre-season friendly at the Rose Bowl on the west coast of the United States.
Both men played until half-time in what was the biggest gate for a football match involving an MLS side in history, with an attendance of over 93,000.
Suarez scored the first-half opener, but not without controversy as Galaxy claimed a handball in the build-up to his goal. The Uruguayan controlled the ball with his shoulder before striking from close range.
Barcelona eventually won the game 2-1, with goals from Suarez and Sergi Roberto, despite a spirited effort from Galaxy’s youngsters in the second half, who pulled a goal back from Tommy Meyer in the dying minutes.
It came after Suarez and Gerrard had shared a tender moment as they ran onto the pitch. Gerrard had previously tweeted a picture with Suarez before the meeting, calling the 28-year-old the “main man”.
Suarez scored 82 goals for Liverpool after joining the club for £22m from Ajax in January 2011. He almost fired the club to the Premier League title with 31 league goals before departing for Barcelona in a £75m deal last summer.
Gerrard, meanwhile, ended his 17-year association with the Reds this summer, joining LA Galaxy in the MLS. He scored on his debut for the club, and set up another two goals in a 5-2 victory over San Jose Earthquakes.
