Strong Quake Shakes Coastal Area in Northwestern Ecuador


A strong earthquake has shaken the northwestern coastal area of Ecuador. Authorities say there are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Service says the quake was measured at magnitude 5.9 and it was centered about 41 kilometers (25.5 miles) south of Propicia, Ecuador. The tremor struck about 35 kilometers (22 miles) below the surface.
Some slight shaking was felt in Ecuador's capital of Quito, which 153 kilomt3ers (94 miles) to the southeast.
