Jose Mourinho's transfer spending since 2004 hits £856.8m with £100m world-record signing of Paul Pogba

Jose Mourinho has never been afraid to splash out in the transfer market – and his £100million move for Paul Pogba takes his career spending over the £850m mark.

The Manchester United manager has spent an incredible £856.8m on players since arriving at cash-rich Chelsea 11 years ago.

Pogba is, of course, Mourinho's most-expensive buy yet and this summer's transfer window represents his biggest-ever period of spending.

Manchester United's signing of Paul Pogba is Jose Mourinho's latest big purchase

Mourinho's first big summer of spending was at Chelsea in 2004, splashing out £81.2m

MOURINHO'S BIGGEST BUYS

Paul Pogba - £100m
Diego Costa - £35m
Luka Modric - £33m
Willian - £30m
Cesc Fabregas - £30m
Eric Bailly - £30m
Andriy Shevchenko - £30m
Juan Cuadrado - £27m
Fabio Coentrao - £26.5m
Henrikh Mkhitaryan - £26m

United have flashed the cash to bring in Eric Bailly (£30m from Villarreal) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£26m from Borussia Dortmund), while also recruiting Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free transfer.

The running total of £156m at United engulfs any of his seasons at Chelsea, Inter Milan or Real Madrid.

Mourinho first arrived in England in 2004, armed with Roman Abramovich’s chequebook, and spent £81.2m in his first season in the Premier League.

Next up for Mourinho was Inter Milan, where Sulley Muntari was an early purchase

Samuel Eto'o helped Mourinho to win his second Champions League crown at Inter

Real Madrid typically spend big and Mourinho was behind buying £20.9m Angel Di Maria

Luka Modric was Mourino's most-expensive purchase in Madrid, arriving for £33m

That would be followed up by more big spending in his three subsequent summers in west London, with a total outlay of £219.8m before his sacking in September 2007.

At Inter Milan Mourinho was more restrained but still broke the £100m barrier over two seasons with Samuel Eto’o, at £17.2m, his most-expensive purchase.

Luka Modric’s £33m signing from Tottenham proved to be Mourinho’s biggest buy at Real Madrid having earlier bought Angel Di Maria for £20.9m and Fabio Coentrao for £26.5m.

At Manchester United Mourinho has spent £156m, including buying Henrikh Mkhitaryan

His Madrid total reached £147m before more big spending followed on his return to Stamford Bridge.

Willian, Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa were all £30m+ purchases, funded in part by major departures from the club.

But this summer has reached new levels, led by the £100m purchase of Pogba. If Mourinho keeps it up, at this rate he will break the billion-pound barrier within 12 months.
