Abuja – A football administrator, Emmanuel Adesanya, on Saturday in Abuja advised coach Stephen Keshi to improve the goalkeeping department of the Super Eagles at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN). Emmanuel Adesanya, the Head of Inter-Clubs Competition Department, Nigeria Football Association (NFA), gave the advice as Nigerians bask in the euphoria of the Eagles’ victory over the Atlas Lions of Morocco. The Eagles rallied from three goals down to win 4-3 after extra time in their quarter-final encounter in Cape Town, South Africa. The win gave the Nigerian side a semi-final ticket in their maiden appearance at the competition which is for players featuring in domestic leagues on the continent. However, Adesanya said that the three goals scored by Morocco were cheap goals the goalkeeper should not have conceded. He said the team’s entire defenceline was also weak and needed to be strengthened before the next game. “I must tell you that Nigeria is yet to arri

Cape Town (S/Africa)- The Atlas Lions of Morocco Coach, Hassan Benabicha, said his players disappointed him during the quarter-final match with the Super Eagles in the ongoing Africa Nations Championship (CHAN). The Lions lost 3-4 to Super Eagles of Nigeria after taking a 3-0 lead in the first half of the dramatic match played on Saturday. Benabicha, who spoke through an interpreter, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Cape Town, South Africa, on Sunday that his players failed to hold on to their early lead. He said his players could have consolidated on the lead and finish off the game in the second half. “I am not disappointed with the result of the match. I am disappointed with my players because they were leading 3-0 only to later lose the game. “This kind of opportunity rarely comes in a tournament like this. My team could have consolidated on their lead,’’ he said. Benabicha said the Eagles’ ability to recover from the three goals deficit and win the match sho

Jonathan set to break silence on Second term

President Goodluck Jonathan President Goodluck Jonathan is set to declare his intention to seek re-election during the 2015 presidential election. The poll has been fixed for February 14 next year by the Independent National Electoral Commission. Following the release of the election timetable by INEC on Friday, the Presidency on Saturday said Jonathan would make public his decision on the 2015 presidential election soon. President Jonathan has so far resisted pressure to declare his intention regarding 2015. On different occasions, he said he would only make his decision known this year. Last Thursday, while speaking on the sidelines of the just-concluded World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Jonathan said he was awaiting INEC’s green light. He said, “I am not going to talk about whether I am standing for election or not because it is not in line with our laws. INEC has a time frame within which candidates are expected to declare. Mata signing ‘the first of many’ – Moyes

Image
LONDON – Manchester United manager David Moyes said on Sunday that the club-record acquisition of Spanish midfielder Juan Mata from Chelsea would be the first of many new signings this year. United completed a move for Mata on Saturday for a reported fee of £37.1 million ($61.2 million, 44.8 million euros), eclipsing the £30.75 million that they paid Tottenham Hotspur to sign Dimitar Berbatov in 2008. Moyes hopes that Mata will help to transform a desperate season that has seen the reigning English champions fall 14 points off the pace in the Premier League and crash out of both domestic cup competitions. United have also reportedly opened talks with striker Wayne Rooney over a new contract and Moyes says that efforts to improve the squad will continue over the months ahead. “This is the first, and there will be many more to come in time. I want the quality of Juan to be the start of it,” Moyes told United’s in-house television channel, MUTV. “I don’t think we will have

Eagles Conquer Morocco In ‘Miracle’ Of Cape Town

Image
ABOUT 25 years after the great ‘Miracle of Damman’, the Super Eagles recorded another milestone in football history Saturday, coming from 0-3 down to suffocate their Moroccan opponent, winning 4-3 to move into the semifinal of the African Nations Championship in South Africa.   The city of Cape Town is noted for its unpredictable weather condition. And so it was in Saturday’s match, as many fans easily predicted a goal feast against Nigeria after the Eagles put their foot wrong to concede three quick goals towards the end of the first half.    But like the situation in Saudi Arabia 25 years ago, where the likes of Chris Ohenhen, Mike Onyemachara, Chris Nwosu, Bawa Abdullahi, Mutiu Adepoju, Tunde Charity and Sam Elijah turned the table against USSR in the FIFA U-20 World Cup, the Coach Stephen Keshi-led Eagles rose to the occasion, when all hope seemed lost.   After struggling to keep a clean slate till the 30th minute, the Eagles defence caved in, giving the Moroccans easy penet
