Hundreds feared drowned off Libya

About 400 migrants are feared drowned after their boat capsized off Libya, survivors have told Save the Children. The Italian coast guard had rescued 144 people on Monday and launched an air and sea search operation in hopes of rescuing others. Save the Children said that many of the survivors were “young men, probably minors”.

President Goodluck Jonathan has rejected the amendments made to the 1999 Constitution by the National Assembly. A top government official who pleaded anonymity said that Jonathan vetoed the amendment on Monday. The official said the decision of the President not to sign the document was because the amendment did not meet the provisions of Section 9 (3) of the 1999 Constitution.

Petroleum Minister, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, has denied reports linking her to seeking asylum in any part of the world. The minister, who spoke through the Group Public Affairs General Manager of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Mr. Ohi Alegbe, denied ever contemplating relocating from Nigeria. According to an online news story yesterday, the minister had been denied asylum by six countries, where she had so far applied, but did not mention the countries involved.
