Ebola virus outbreak broadens

Image
This follows recent reports of infections in Liberia and Sierra Leone, despite  Guinea's efforts to stop the disease from spreading . It started off in February, in the remote forest region of Guinea. One elderly man fell ill in Dinguiraye. After his burial in Dabola -- 70 km away -- his four brothers developed the same symptoms. And so it spread, rapidly. The incurable disease has seen Saudi Arabia suspend visas for Muslim pilgrims from the region. About 280 people died in am Ebola oubreak in 1976. There is no cure for the disease. * Watch the video  in the gallery above for more insight on the disease spreading across the West Africa region.

Picture: AFP PHOTO / REINNIER KAZE MINAWAO - Alima fled fighting between Nigeria's army and the radical Islamist movement Boko Haram 10 days ago for neighbouring Cameroon, where she has joined thousands of refugees who feel abandoned by their homeland. "The only solution was to leave," the 31-year-old said as she ground maize flour for the evening meal in the courtyard of the Minawao refugee camp in the far north of Cameroon, close to the Nigerian border. "Here, there is no kudi (money in the Kanuri language), but it's better compared with Nigeria," adds Alima, who fled from Bama, where the Nigerian army is engaged in repeated attacks on the armed sect. As a Kanuri, Alima belongs to the dominant ethnic group in northeast Nigeria, as do most members of Boko Haram, which has attacked is

The gunman, whose motive remains unknown, then shot himself in the head with a .45-caliber pistol, he added. "At this time there is no indication that this incident is related to terrorism," Milley told a new

I Was Offended By Nick Cannon In Whiteface, Until He Broke It Down Like This…

Image
Recently,  I voiced my disdain for Nick Cannon’s choice to paint his face white to promote his album, “White People Party Music,”   that hits the stores on April 1, 2014. While I realize that Cannon ’s not the first, nor the last Black comedian to use Whiteface (gosh, I hate that term) for humor, I was still disturbed that he made the choice. I also understand the painful history Blackface has and that it in no way compares to Whiteface, but it still bothers me. I’d rather no one paint their face the color of a different race for a cheap laugh. Because of my very strong opinion,  I was asked to be on “Good Morning America.” Shortly after that,  Nick sent #TeamBeautiful   a message, saying  people forget that he’s a comedian first and his painted face was for the sake of his artistry. I rolled my eyes at his explanation. So then Cannon offered me a chance to personally chat with him regarding the matter and the conversation shocked me. I found myself completely understanding his re

Culture clash over tribal wife-swapping in Namibia

Image
Windhoek - Wife swapping among Namibia's nomadic tribes has been practised for generations but a legislator's call to enshrine it in law has stirred debate about women's rights and tradition in modern society. The practice is more of a gentlemen's agreement where friends can have sex with each others' wives with no strings attached. Swinging with an African tribal touch? Or "rape", as some critics see it. The wives have little say in the matter, according to those who denounce the custom as both abusive and risky in a country with one of the world's highest HIV/Aids rates. But the Ovahimba and Ovazemba tribes, based mainly in this southern African country's arid north, contend their age-old custom strengthens friendships and prevents promiscuity. "It's a culture that gives us unity and friendship," said Kazeongere Tjeundo, a lawmaker and deputy president of the opposition Democratic Turnhalle Alliance of Namibia. "It's up to
