Leicester City 1-2 Manchester United - PLAYER RATINGS: Zlatan Ibrahimovic nets late to win the Community Shield

Image
Zlatan Ibrahimovic's late header secured the first silverware of Jose Mourinho's Manchester United reign, as the Red Devils beat Leicester City 2-1 to claim the Community Shield at Wembley. The Swede beat Wes Morgan in the air as he connected with Antonio Valencia's cross, to head back across goal and into the far corner of the net to secure victory for the Red Devils. It looked as if the game was heading to extra-time, after Marouane Fellaini's horribly under-hit back pass had allowed Jamie Vardy to level Jesse Lingard's opener, before Ibrahimovic struck to claim the trophy for his side. Here,Sportsmail's LAURIE WHITWELL rates the players. LEICESTER CITY 4-4-2 Kasper Schmeichel  Got a toe to opening goal and came up agonisingly short for second. Olympic Basketball 2016: Scores, Highlights and Reaction from Sunday

Image
A day after the United States men got their quest for gold underway in Rio, the U.S. women highlighted the slate of games Sunday in group play. With the deepest group in the field, the Americans are a heavy favorite to walk away with their sixth straight gold medal. The U.S. has not lost on the Olympic stage since falling in the 1992 semifinals. The squad's last loss on a major international stage came at the 2006 World Cup—which coincidentally took place in Brazil. On the men's side, reigning silver medalist Spain will take on Croatia on Sunday night. The Spaniards, while still expected to compete for a medal, are far weaker than their 2012 counterparts thanks to the absence of center Marc Gasol. Mainz vs. Liverpool: Score, Reaction from 2016 Pre-Season Friendly

Image
Liverpool's pre-season campaign drew to a dour close on Sunday after manager Jurgen Klopp saw his men slump to a 4-0 defeat against his former club in Germany. Daniel Brosinski and Jhon Cordoba netted for the hosts before the interval, while Yunus Malli and Yoshinori Muto scored after the break to ensure the Reds ended their 2016-17 preparations on a low note. Klopp's side went from heroes to zeroes in less than a day. The result came in stark contrast to Saturday's 4-0 triumph over reigning La Liga champions Barcelona, although Adam Lallana and Emre Can were the only players to make both starting lineups. Commentator John Bradley highlighted just how quickly success can turn to failure, though the impact in pre-season is fairly minimal: A tale of 2 days for Liverpool. Very good v Barcelona yesterday. Very bad v Mainz today. All in pre season so perspective needed on both — John Bradley (@JBcommentator) August 7, 2016 Despite keeping the stars of Barca

Macedonia flood deaths rise to 21; more rain forecast

Image
Authorities have declared a crisis in parts of Macedonia after powerful storms and floods collapsed homes and left at least 21 people dead, state-run media said Sunday. Winds from the storm -- which mainly hit the western and northwestern part of the country -- were clocked at 72 to 80 kph (44-49 mph). In one day or less, some residents experienced more than three times the rainfall they normally receive in a month, CNN meteorologists reported. More rain is possible in the region, with a significant chance for showers during the rest of this week. Most of the flood victims were found in the villages of Stajkovci, Singjelic, Smilkovci and Aravinovo near the capital, Skopje, according to the state-run Macedonia Information Agency, or MIA. The dead included a child, age 7 or 8. MIA earlier had reported that six people were missing in the disaster, but so far no updates have been provided. Workers have set up emergency response centers to assess the flood damage. Land

Ex-KKK leader David Duke has more black voter support than Trump

Image
Donald Trump’s numbers among black voters are so low, he’s doing worse than a former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard. David Duke, the notorious former KKK leader, had a 14% approval rating among black voters for his U.S. Senate run, the University of New Orleans’ Survey Research Center reported in its findings. While Duke’s 14% is still low, it makes Trump’s microscopic support from black voters look even smaller. The Republican presidential candidate has only been able to muster a measly 1% of black voter’s support, according to the latest  NBC/Wall Street Journal polling. Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, who is running for U.S. Senate in Louisiana, had 14% black voter support.(MAX BECHERER/AP) In key battleground states, like Ohio and Pennsylvania, Trump actually polled at 0% heading into the Republican National Convention. While Duke has been a known racist for decades now, Trump has been catching up himself, earning the ire of Paul Ryan in June for comments the hous

Now Donald Trump says he could abandon Japan because they can 'sit at home and watch Sony television' if the US is attacked

Image
Donald Trump announced Friday that he would 'walk' from Japan and other US allies if they don't commit to defending America and pay their 'fair share' of NATO fees. 'You know we have a treaty with Japan, where if Japan is attacked, we have to use the full force and might of the United States,' Trump said to a crowd in Iowa. 'If we're attacked, Japan doesn't have to do anything. They can sit home and watch Sony television, OK?' The slam came during a speech that countries like Japan and South Korea that receive US protection, and others that he said do not make big enough financial contributions to NATO. The presidential hopeful said that the United States protects Japan, South Korea, Germany, Saudi Arabia and other nations, but 'they don't pay anything near what it costs.' 'They have to pay. Because this isn't 40 years ago,' he added. 'It's got to be a two-way street.' Japan's alliance with Washington

Afghan Islamic State releases captured US kit photos

Image
The so-called Islamic State group has released photos of weapons and kit belonging to US troops discarded after fighting in Afghanistan. The photos include the ID cards of a soldier named Ryan Larson it obtained following clashes in Nangarhar province bordering Pakistan. They show an American portable rocket launcher, radio, grenades and other kit not commonly used by Afghan forces. The US has admitted the loss of weapons but insists no troops were captured. American military officials say they are still trying to determine when exactly when the equipment was lost. Image caption Rocket launchers and grenades were among the equipment displayed "Specialist Larson was attached to a unit conducting a partnered [operation] with Afghan forces," US military spokesman Commander Ron Flesvig said in an email statement on Sunday. "The soldier's ID and some of the equipment were left behind after the [operation]. The loss of personal identification is unfor

Oscar Pistorius denies attempting suicide in jail

Image
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Oscar Pistorius was treated for minor wrist injuries at a hospital and has been returned to a South African jail where the Olympian is serving a six-year sentence for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, prison officials said Sunday. The report of injuries to Pistorius, who denied he had attempted suicide, came as athletes compete at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Pistorius and his coach said before Steenkamp’s 2013 killing that they wanted to retire together at the Rio games. Pistorius told officials that he suffered the injuries after falling out of bed, said Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesman for the South Africa’s correctional services department. The former track star was initially treated by medical staff at the Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria, and then transferred to Kalafong hospital, said Manelisi Wolela, another official at the department. Pistorius was returned to his cell on Saturday, and an investigation is underway. “Oscar Pistorius denied specu

Pope Says It’s ‘Unacceptable’ That Children Die in Syria’s War World

Image
Pope Francis said on Sunday it is “unacceptable” that the civilians, including children, “must pay the price” of Syria’s civil war, now in its sixth year. Addressing a crowd in St. Peter’s Square after the traditional Angelus prayer, the pontiff addressed the battles that have broken out in the northern city of Aleppo between rebels and supporters of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government. Opposition forces were reported on Saturday to have breached the government siege on rebel-held neighborhoods in Aleppo, where the United Nations said some 300,000 people were trapped. “It’s unacceptable that so many helpless — including many children — must pay the price of the conflict, the price of closed hearts and the lack of desire for peace by the powerful,” Francis said, according to the Associated Press. In May, he condemned the fighting in Aleppo after airstrikes killed scores of people, including children. Time.

Iran says it executed nuclear scientist for spying

Image
Iran has executed a nuclear scientist who mysteriously turned up in the United States six years ago and returned to Tehran a few months later, authorities said Sunday, in the first official confirmation of the researcher’s fate since he arrived back in his homeland. Iranian officials offered no details about the charges against Shahram Amiri, whose case has left unanswered questions about whether he voluntarily defected to the United States or — as he claimed — was abducted by agents while on a religious pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia in 2009. Amiri surfaced in 2010 in videos posted online from an undisclosed location in the United States. Later that year, he arrived unannounced at the Iranian interests section at the Pakistani Embassy in Washington and demanded to be sent home. Keep Reading An Iranian judiciary spokesman, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, told reporters in Tehran that Amiri was convicted of spying charges as he “provided the enemy with vital information of the country,” acco

South Sudanese civilians living in a displacement camp fear U.N. peacekeepers can’t protect them from a massacre

MALAKAL, South Sudan — She was living in the safest place she could find, a white plastic tent on a muddy field where 32,791 people crammed together under a blue United Nations flag. For more than two years, Rachael Mayik had found refuge in this camp from one of the world’s most brutal wars. But now the fighting seemed to be speeding toward her. Radios blared reports from the capital, 300 miles away, about the breakdown of a cease-fire between the opposing forces of the president and the vice president. She saw the planes evacuating aid workers from the nearby dirt airstrip. At the field hospital, doctors were making space for an influx of victims. Above: Children stand on a berm at the U.N. Protection of Civilians site in Malakal, South Sudan. More than 32,000 displaced people are housed in the makeshift tent city, one of six in the war-torn five-year-old country. The camp, Mayik knew, could be overrun. “We need a way out,” said Mayik, a tall, weary-eyed 56-year-old, squinting into

Storm in Macedonia leaves 17 dead, 60 injured; many flee

SKOPJE, Macedonia — The Macedonian capital of Skopje has been hit by torrential rain and floods that left at least 17 people dead, six missing and sent 60 others to the hospital, authorities said Sunday as police and army helicopters searched for the missing and evacuated hundreds from the flood zone. Heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms hit the city and its northern suburbs late Saturday. Special police, army units and firefighters were sent to the worst-hit areas as well as the nearby villages of Stajkovci, Aracinovo and Smiljkovci. Hundreds of homes and vehicles were destroyed by the floods, roads are still impassable and several areas are without electricity. Authorities said more than 1,000 people had been evacuated so far. Skopje mayor Koce Trajanovski described the damage as “the worst Skopje has ever seen.” After a meeting of the National Crisis Management Center, Health Minister Nikola Todorov said the death toll could soon rise. He said the government plans to declare
