FG: Obasanjo got his facts wrong about the $55bn depletion

President Goodluck Jonathan-led federal government on Wednesday reacted to allegations leveled against it by former President, Olusegun Obasanjo about the squandering of $55billion of the nation’s foreign reserve, stressing that the former President got his facts wrong. Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who came to the defense of the administration in a statement, explained that former President, Obasanjo left a gross reserve of $43.13 billion, comprising the CBN’s external reserves of $31.5 billion, $9.43 billion in the Excess Crude Account, and $2.18 billion in Federal Government’s savings in May 2007.

Jonathan gives Jega marching order on PVC

President Goodluck Jonathan has given Independent Elec­toral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Pro­fessor Attahiru Jega, the marching order to ensure all registered Nigerians get their permanent voters cards to enable them vote their pre­ferred candidates in the Feb­ruary elections. Criticisms, lamentations and anger have continued to trail the distribution of the per­manent voters cards (PVC) to Nigerians by INEC with many accusing the commission of deliberatly planning to disen­franchise them from voting in the coming elections. The President gave the or­der when he swore in the new INEC commissioner, Prof. Akinola Murtala Salau, Na­tional Commissioner repre­senting Oyo State and member of the commission. This is even as Jega has re­sponded that all registered Ni­gerians would get their PVC before the election date of February 14.

Dismissed ​female ​Police officer arrested for stealing ​​car

A police corporal, Funmilayo Balogun, has been arrested for stealing a Honda Accord car worth N5 million​,​ which she sold to unsuspecting client. The 35-year-old suspect was on Wednesday paraded by the Ogun State Police Command. She was wearing a police uniform with the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police. She was dismissed in 2010 by the Ondo State Command for presenting fake result to get police employment. After her dismissal, she allegedly promoted herself to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police and allegedly started stealing cars in automobile stores across the South-West of the country

Buhari Appoints Atiku, Tinubu Vice Chairmen In Presidential Campaign Council

In a bid to ensure everyone important to his election bid is carried along, the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, has named former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as integral parts of his Presidential Campaign Council (PCC). Atiku is to serve as vice-chairman (north) of the council, while Tinubu is to serve as vice-chairman of the PCC (south). Buhari will serve as chairman of the council and his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as alternate chairman. Former governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi is to serve as the head of the Policy, Research and Strategy directorate of the campaign, while former chief of army staff, Gen. Abdulrahman Danbazau was appointed as the head of the security directorate.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Wednesday, said the chances of the party in the February elections was bright as the party was fielding candidates with verifiable record of performance as well as the support of a majority of the voting population. According to a statement by the party, signed by its national publicity secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, the PDP stands out as the only party that commands genuine followership among Nigerians irrespective of religious and ethnic affiliation. “This will drive the voting pattern and reflect accordingly in the results of the Presidential, governorship, National and States Assembly elections across the federation. “This election is beyond propaganda and empty popularity claims in the social media. Nigerians will vote; their votes will count and this will give us victory. This is because we are running on a record of verifiable achievements of our elected and appointed officers at the federal and state levels,” the statement read.

Jonathan/PDP takes over Lagos on Thursday, flags off campaign

Tens of thousands of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supporters across the South West would converge on the Tafawa Balewa Square grounds in Lagos for the flag-off of the Jonathan/Sambo presidential campaigns on Thursday. The two governors of the PDP in the South West, Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo and Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti will be joined by party leaders from the zone to host the president and all other party leaders from other parts of the country. Governorship candidates of the party will also be presented to the public at the campaign ground.

Boko Haram Threatens Cameroon In New Video

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau has threatened Cameroon in a video message on YouTube, warning that the same fate would befall the country as neighbouring Nigeria. The video, which was posted on January 5, is directly addressed to Cameroon’s President Paul Biya after repeated fighting between militants and troops in the country’s far north. “Oh Paul Biya, if you don’t stop this, your evil plot, you will taste what has befallen Nigeria… Your troops cannot do anything to us,” Shekau said in Arabic.

The All Progressives Congress has dismissed as hogwash the position of the Directorate of State Security after its raid on the party’s offices in Lagos, describing the DSS “findings”, presented to the media by the agency on Wednesday, as “a great disservice to Nigeria and an embarrassment to all intelligence-gathering organisations around the world.” In a statement in Abuja on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party also alleged that the timing of the release of the findings was a plot orchestrated in collusion with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to distract the APC from its ongoing campaigns for next month’s elections.
