PDP looks set to challenge election decision in court

NIGERIA'S ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) may challenge yesterday's presidential election results in court after it emerged that its polling agents refused to sign the final result sheets issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec). Yesterday, Inec declared General Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the winner of Nigeria's presidential elections, defeating incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan by 2.57m votes. General Buhari scored 15,424,921 votes or 53.95% of the valid ballots cast, compared with 12,853,162 for President Jonathan.

Musa scored a cracker against South Africa last Sunday, as the Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw in Nelspruit. US President Barack Obama praised Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday for conceding defeat in an election that he said showed “Nigeria’s commitment to democratic principles.” “President Jonathan has placed his country’s interests first by conceding the election and congratulating president-elect (Muhammadu) Buhari on his victory,” Obama said in a White House statement. Buhari won the election by 2.57 million votes official results showed Wednesday, defeating incumbent Jonathan in a close fought race.

EU congratulates Buhari, says Nigerians show how democracy works

The European Union (EU) has congratulated Nigeria’s president-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari on his victory at the March 28 presidential polls. The EU High Representative/Vice-President, Federica Mogherini was quoted in a statement by Mr Modestus Chukwulaka, its Public Affairs Officer as saying by holding successful elections, Nigerian had shown how democracy could work. Mogherini said that the tribute of the election went to all Nigerians who participated in the elections.

MEND congratulates Buhari, commends Jonathan

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, has congratulated the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) on his victory in Saturday’s presidential elections, stating that Nigerians made the right choice. Spokesman of the group, Jomo Gbomo, in a statement, said: “The Nigerian people have spoken and elected General Mohammadu Buhari to be the next President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “In doing so, we have not only made the right choice of a new leadership, we have also reaffirmed the strength of our democracy.”

(AP) Abuja - Borno state in northeast Nigeria, worst-hit by six years of Boko Haram violence, voted overwhelmingly in favour of opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari, results showed on Tuesday. The former military ruler, who has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of failing to provide leadership in the insurgency, won 473 543 ballots in the state, or 94% of the valid votes cast.
