News of the governor’s departure was disclosed via a statement released by his chief press secretary, Hassan Mijinyawa. Suntai was reportedly accompanied on his trip by his wife,Hauwa and a medical team.

Breaking: Bomb Explosion rocks Yobe

According to a new report on Premium Times, A bomb attack has just occurred in Potiskum, Yobe state. Eye whtnesses say a suicide bomber targeting members of the Shiite group, Islamic Brotherhood of Nigeria, detonated his explosive vest, killing many instantly. A resident of the town, Adamu Mohammed, told Premium Times over the telephone that nearly 20 persons were killed and several others injured.

CAF decides on 2015 AFCON Monday

A decision on whether the African Nations Cup finals will go ahead in January or be postponed because of fears over the Ebola virus is expected on Monday after the Moroccan government meets with Confederation of African Football leaders. The meeting in Rabat was fixed last month when Morocco wrote to CAF asking it to postpone the tournament after being advised by its own health ministry that hosting the 16-team tournament posed a risk of the spread of the deadly virus. CAF immediately rejected the notion, insisting the three-week tournament go ahead as scheduled from January 17 to February 8, Reuters reports.

Skye Bank pays N100b to complete acquisition of Mainstreet Bank

Skye Bank Plc at the weekend paid the 80 per cent balance for Mainstreet Bank’s shares, beating today’s deadline. Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and investment banking industry sources confirmed the payment and the completion of the acquisition. Sources said Skye Bank paid N100 billion to AMCON on Friday as balance for the acquisition, which was valued at N120 billion. Skye Bank, on October 9, paid the mandatory deposit of 20 per cent for the acquisition, a deal that was valued at between N120 billion and N126 billion. The differential in the value was due to the variation in the exchange rate base used by the various sources for the dollar-based value of the deal. The payment of the 80 per cent balance has fulfilled the terms of the Share Sale and Purchase Agreement signed by AMCON and Skye Bank.

‘Jonathan, PDP can’t get 240 Reps for Speaker’s removal’

He also declared that with the taking over of Mubi in the Northeastern part by Boko Haram insurgents, Nigeria is clearly at war, with a competent president needed to tackle insecurity. Abe, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), spoke yesterday at his Bera-Ogoni hometown in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State, while sensitising members of the executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 17 wards, on the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) between November 7 and 9.

NLC: restore Tambuwal’s security

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday lent its force to the condemnation of Inspector General of Police Suleiman Abba’s withdrawal of House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal’s security aides. At the weekend, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) slammed the IG for the action, saying the police have no power to implement the law. Like the NBA, the NLC called for the immediate restoration of Tambuwal’s security. In a statement entitled “Nothing must happen to Tambuwal”, signed by NLC General Secretary Dr Peter Ozo-Eson, the congress said withdrawing the security detail for defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is unconstitutional as no section of the Constitution states that the Speaker must come from the majority party.

Falana to police chief: resign

Lagos lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has accused Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Suleiman Abba of partisan politics, subversion of the Constitution, the Police Act and the Electoral Act. He also accused the police chief of persecution of House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Falana advised the police chief to resign, if he cannot work without fear or favour. He threatened to file a suit before a Federal High Court to determine the competence and suitability of Abba “to superintend and manage the Nigeria Police Force in the public interest, if the trend of subverting the Constitution, the Police Act and the Electoral Act by your good self and other top police officers continues unabated”.

Fed Govt to return Sanusi’s passport, seized salaries

Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido Sanusi is to have his impounded travel passport and withheld salaries, The Nation learnt yesterday. Besides, the Kano Central Prison is to be relocated for better security at the Emir’s palace. It is all as part of last Thursday’s reconciliation with President Goodluck Jonathan. The Presidency is believed to have decided to have a “total reconciliation with the Emir”. Although the Presidency is aware of the closeness of the Emir to the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the olive branch is meant to ensure his “neutrality” during next year’s elections. A government source said: “After the open meeting last Thursday, the President and the Emir met at the inner recess of the Presidential Villa for about five minutes.

Party Chairman Adamu Mu’azu is set to meet today the party’s caucus in the House — in a move to get members’ support for a plot to impeach Tambuwal, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Besides, Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha is under pressure to reconvene plenary, which Tambuwal suspended till December 3.

Tinubu Returns from London Hospital

Former Lagos State Governor and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu returned to Nigeria on Thursday morning. He arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport and was received by his close aides and former Commissioner for Justice in Lagos Prof Yemi Osibajo. There were reports that Tinubu was flown to London on Friday following rumours that his health condition has deteriorated.

France isolates Ebola patient in military hospital

France on Monday admitted treating an Ebola-positive patient, who contracted the virus while working for the United Nations in Sierra Leone. This was disclosed by the French health ministry. The patient, whose identity has yet to be made public, has been quarantined in an “high-security isolation” at an Army teaching hospital in Saint-Mande near Paris.

Army accuses Air Force of bombing Adamawa checkpoints

As the battle between the Nigerian military and the outlawed Islamic sect, Boko Haram, intensified in Adamawa State, some Army officers have accused their counterparts in the Air Force for bombarding checkpoints manned by Army. One of the soldiers, who spoke on condition of anonymity to our correspondent on Monday in Yola, said “ We are 17 in number, manning checkpoints on the Mubi side, when an Air Force plane drop bombs on us. We all fled the area. Up until now, I cannot say where my colleagues are, because we ran in different directions. “I managed to come to Yola through Cameroon, after trekking for some kilometres. I was assisted by some good Samaritan.”

HIV-positive people shut NACA over N140bn antiretroviral drugs

Over 300 protesters under the aegis of Network of People Living With HIV/AIDS on Monday shut down the office of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS over their miserable conditions due to access to antiretroviral drugs and ongoing withdrawal of funding support to HIV/AIDS by external funding partners. They also complained about the non-implementation of the Comprehensive Response Plan inaugurated by President Goodluck Jonathan to bridge the existing treatment access gaps.

Gunmen free 144 inmates, kill one in Kogi prison

No fewer than 144 inmates of the Koton-Karfi Prison in Kogi State have been set free by gunmen, who invaded the prison on Monday. One of the prisoners, whose identity has yet to be made known, was also killed. The Controller of the prisons confirmed the attack.
