As the controversy continues to trail the production and supply of the permanent voters’ cards (PVCs) for the elections, it has emerged that a Nigerian company, ACT.Technologies Limited, was awarded a N2.6 billion contract by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to produce the PVCs, which was in turn sub-contracted to a Chinese firm. This is coming as the Chairman of the commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Thursday decried the antics of politicians ahead of the elections, noting that their actions were becoming a threat to the conduct of peaceful polls.

The presidency yesterday came out to defend its earlier position of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on INEC’s use of card reading machines for the 2015 general elections. It did this by questioning the legality and efficiency of using the device in the forthcoming elections. Vice President, Namadi Sambo who disclosed this argued that while his party was not against the use of card readers, which the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, believes will help curb electoral fraud, it was concerned whether the decision was backed by law and about the possibility of many Nigerians being disenfranchised.

Gambo undergoes surgery to remove bullets

Kano Pillars star striker Gambo Mohammed has undergone surgery to remove bullets lodged in his body after his club’s bus was attacked last week by robbers. Gambo is therefore the only player who suffered gunshot wounds during the incident and who is still in hospital in Kano a week after the attack. Eneji Otekpa and Murtala Adamu, who were also injured in the attack, were discharged on Wednesday from the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano.

African states want UN trust fund for Boko Haram force

 African states want the United Nations to set up a trust fund to finance a force to fight Boko Haram in Nigeria and called on the international community to supply intelligence and equipment, according to a draft UN resolution. The draft UN Security Council text endorses the creation of a force by Nigeria and its neighbours Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Benin to take on Boko Haram. The 54-nation African Union has already approved a force of up to 10 000 troops.
