The New Facebook DeepFace Can Identify Faces Just As You Do

Facebook has developed a new software that is able to recognize faces just as good as you can. The software ominously called DeepFace can determine whether two photographed faces are of the same person with 97.25% practically of that of humans which only score slightly better on the same test: 97.53% Based on information like the distance between the eyes, and from the nose to the eyes, Facebook’s existing software is already able to suggest friends to tag when you upload a photo. DeepFace, however, uses much more advanced technology, creating a 3D model of the photographed face, which it is able to rotate and compare with other images.

Nokia launches new phone for Android platform

LG, Motorola Announce Android Wear Smartwatches

Google has dropped a large wearable bombshell today in the form of a developer preview for “Android Wear,” a smartwatch platform that works a bit like Google Now for your wrist. Now, various hardware manufacturers are coming out of the woodwork to announce their own plans to create wearable devices. LG is the first, with the LG G Watch, which Engadget reports is probably due to arrive next quarter. The watch appears to be a simple, plastic square with an LCD touchscreen. In a statement, LG’s CEO of mobile communications said simply that LG would “pull out all the stops in both design and engineering.” LG also said it was “developed in close collaboration with Google,” but stopped short of dubbing it a “Nexus” device. Motorola also has announced plans for a smartwatch. The company, which is about to be purchased by Lenovo, said in a blog post today that it would be called Moto 360. Will.I.Am, the X-factor judge, maker of gaudy iPhone accessories has announced he will be releasing his own smart watch in July. Unlike other smartwatches that rely on a connected mobile to make calls, his will include a dialling function (and so, presumably, a SIM card) built directly into the device, the Black Eyed Peas’ frontman said. During a segment on Alan Carr: Chatty Man, Will.I.Am showed off a bulky prototype, promising that it had access to the usual social media site (twitter, Instagram, Facebook) and it could also be used to “work out with,” with the addition of a pair of wireless Bluetooth earphones.

Mickey Rooney, one of the longest-tenured actors in movie history, died Sunday at the age of 93, KABC reports. Los Angeles Police Commander Andrew Smith told the Associated Press that Rooney was with his family when he died at his North Hollywood home. News of Rooney’s death was first reported by TMZ. Rooney appeared in more than 300 films, from silent films in the 1920s to recent blockbusters such as “The Muppets” and “Night at the Museum.” The actor – who stood just over five feet tall – reached his greatest film successes with MGM during the 1930s and 1940s, singing and dancing, his boyish effervescence carrying him to box office heights.

Robbers kill contractor, shoot 12-year-old daughter in Lagos

Surajudeen’s 12-year-old daughter, Aisha, was also shot in the face during the operation which lasted for less than an hour. When our correspondent visited the home of the deceased on Sunday morning, residents and relatives were seen consoling the wife and other children of the deceased. The children of the deceased were too distraught to speak when our correspondent approached them for comments. Nine die in Ogun bus accident

Nine passengers were burnt beyond recognition after fire gutted a Lagos-bound commercial bus on Warewa Long Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State on Saturday. We  learnt that nine others sustained injuries in the accident which occurred around 4pm. Although police sources said six persons had lost their lives, the Federal Road Safety Corps said nine passengers were killed. It was learnt that the yellow Mazda bus was filled to capacity when the accident occurred. The sector commander, FRSC, Chidi Nkwonta, told  PUNCH Metro  that the cause of the accident had yet to be ascertained but investigations were ongoing. Nkwonta said the bus was heading from the Ibafo area of Ogun State. He said, “The accident was a lone crash. Ebikeme who was kidnapped at Kiagbodo in Bomadi, Delta State, last Wednesday, was said to have been freed at about 12 midnight Saturday. Nigeria will today be declared Africa’s largest economy as a result of the rebasing of its economy. Sources close to the Ministry of Finance and the National Bureau of Statistics said the minister of finance and coordinating minister for the economy, Dr Ngozi Okonji-Iweala, will today announce Nigeria’s new rebased gross domestic product (GDP) of about $432 billion compared to that of South Africa which stood at $370 billion at the end of 2013. It was learnt that a list of activities captured under the new standards increased from 33 to 46 because of the addition of sectors such as Nollywood, telecommunications and information services, publishing, motion pictures, sound recording and music production as well as arts, entertainment and recreation, financial institutions, insurance and real sectors.
