Youth in Kano burnt down a sharia court scheduled to hear a case of blasphemy against ​the​ prophet of Islam. The court, situated at Rijiyar Lemo, was razed down before the man alleged to have blasphemed the prophet was brought in. The youth also took to the streets protesting an alleged blasphemous comment by the leader of a sect, Tijjaniyya, Abdul Nyass.

Liverpool cancelled a meeting with Sterling on Friday because of comments attributed to the player's agent. Aidy Ward reportedly said the England forward, 20, will not sign a new deal even if offered "£900,000 a week".

FG Commences Privatisation of Nigerian Railway

A Nigerian Railway Corporation train In a bid to ensure that the present gains recorded in the railway transport are not eroded in the years ahead, the federal government has begun moves to privatise the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC). Already, it has directed the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) to commence the privatisation of NRC and other railway facilities across the country. The National Council on Privatisation (NCP) gave the directive to the BPE and the Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility (NIAF), after its council meeting in Abuja.

SENATE PROBES FUEL SCARCITY

The Senate has instituted an investigation into circumstances leading to persistence fuel scarcity in the country. The lawmakers mandated the Senate Committees on Petroleum Resources (Upstream and Downstream) to, with immediate effect, commence investigation into the causes of the current scarcity. The probe was instituted following a motion by the Deputy Senate Majority Leader, Senator Abdul Ningi, who prayed the upper chamber to pay serious attention to the biting fuel crisis which was creating great hardship for Nigerians.

According to him, this is because of the refusal of the government to provide the committee with the needed information to carry out its duty. Despite adopting several family planning strategies, a 52-year-old grandmother, Mrs. Funke Adamson, has ended up giving birth to a baby girl clutching white ‘Ileke’ (Yoruba name for beads) on her hands.  Baby-Bukola Funke, a traditional worshipper said she was delivered of the baby that has now been described by many as a “miracle child” on Monday, May 11, 2015 at a Trado-medical home in Apapa. Speaking to Vanguard, she said: “I received a message from an Osun Custodian who said that a child is on the way for me. I didn’t believe him. I didn’t realize until the baby was three and half month old when I began to experienced flow of membranous fluid.”

Burundi protesters defy police crackdown

Anti-government protesters in Burundi marched on the streets of the capital Bujumbura Friday, defying one of the heaviest pushes by police to end weeks of demonstrations. At least two protesters were shot dead and eight wounded in clashes on Thursday with police, the Red Cross said, the latest victims of the unrest triggered by President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term, in which more than 20 people have died.
