Double advantage of potential new diabetes treatment

Image
Blocking the hormone that raises sugar levels in the blood could increase insulin levels while keeping blood sugar levels down. The findings in mice, to be published in eLife, point to a novel way to treat diabetes - but only in some patients. They also challenge the benefits of the strategy in severely diabetic patients. "Inhibiting the hormone glucagon has recently been explored as an alternative or supplement to insulin injection, but it has limitations," says lead author Pedro Herrera from the University of Geneva. "Our research reveals why: the body needs to have some residual insulin production in order for a treatment blocking glucagon to work."

Bukola Saraki: How to fall from the top

Image
Senate President Bukola Saraki Abubakar Bukola Saraki (or ABS as he is fondly called by his admirers) had worked tirelessly to get to the top. He had no reason not to; his father, Dr Abubakar Olusola Saraki, the legendary generous, medical doctor, businessman and politician had earlier achieved the enviable feat of becoming the Senate Leader in the Second Republic. However, Olusola Saraki’s, couple of attempts to become Nigeria’s President were serially frustrated by Ibrahim Babangida’s hopeless transition programme. It is normal therefore to expect Saraki Junior to seek to exceed the achievements of his father. That was how Saraki, two-term Governor of Kwara State, 2003 to 2011, got the motivation to dump the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

NNPC fights for oil cargoes as revenue squeeze bites

Image
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, is in a standoff with energy giants ExxonMobil and Royal Dutch Shell over ownership of physical crude cargoes as the West African nation seeks to shore up its creaking budget. The dispute has delayed some of the country’s monthly oil export programmes and added to confusion over just how much crude Nigeria has at its disposal to exchange for gasoline, sell to fund its record 2016 budget or use as debt collateral. Discrepancies between NNPC and companies with production sharing contracts (PSCs) that entitle them to oil have always existed, but the crude price crash has increased the urgency to sort them out as both state and foreign firms feel the pinch. The stakes are high for Nigeria, which is fighting its worst financial crises in years and is also swapping more oil for gasoline to end a nationwide fuel shortage.
