Nigerian military searches for girls abducted by Boko Haram

Nigeria's military combed the woods in search of more than 100 school girls who were abducted earlier this week by Boko Haram Islamists, authorities said Wednesday. Vigilantes and volunteers aided in the search near the northeastern town of Chibok, where heavily armed men descended on the Government Secondary School Monday night as the girls slept in their dormitories. After a long gun battle with soldiers guarding the school, the militants herded the girls onto buses, vans and trucks and drove off, flanked by motorcycles. "They took away my daughter and my niece... and we fear for their safety in the hands of these merciless people that take delight in killing and destruction," said the mother of one of the abducted girls. "I don't know what to do. The whole family is confused and we have turned to prayers which is all we have." As the death toll from the bomb blast that hit the Nyanya motor park, Abuja on Monday increases, forensic inves- tigators from the United States of America, yes- terday arrived Nigeria to join local security opera- tives in conducting inves- tigations. Boko Haram abducts 100 female students in Borno

Boko Haram insurgents have abducted about 100 female students of a public school in Borno State who were writing their West Africa Examination Council (WAEC), examinations. The abducted students, according to security sources, were among the over 250 WAEC/SSCE  candidates of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok in the southern part of Borno. Some insurgents were said to have invaded the school on Monday night, broke into the hostels and ordered the girls out in their night wears. “They then forced them into the school bus and other vehicles they brought, shot sporadically and sped off,” a resident said. Some residents also said the insurgents opened fire on the people, killing over 10 persons even as they set ablaze houses and shops. It was not clear if any of the school teachers was affected by the attack but sources said some of them might have been killed. Offices, banks shut as workers rush home NASS security refute scare, says its “rumours” Less than 24 hours after the deadly Nyanya bomb blast which killed over 71 people, there was pandemonium at the National Assembly over rumours of bomb scare. Lawmakers and National Assembly workers and staff of banks within the premises were ordered to close their offices and the premises; particularly the White House was evacuated. The development started around 2:00pm when some legislative aides and civil servants were seen discussing in groups following an alleged strange movement of some group of people whose mission to the National Assembly was said to be suspicious. Sunnewsonline.com  however, gathered that meeting was immediately convened where it was resolved that the Sergeant-At-Arms should move round the National Assembly with bomb detectors.

Hospitals appeal for blood donation

Hospitals in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, yesterday, appealled to residents of the city to donate blood to save the lives of the survivors of the Nyanya bomb blast. Most of the injured victims, who were said to be in ctitical condition, according to hospital workers, need blood transfusion to stay alive.A visit to the Asokoro, Garki, Nyanya, Maitama, and Wuse general hospitals, where most of the bomb blast victims were taken to, revealed that many volunteers had agreed to donate blood  for the victims. At the hospitals, which have been besieged by relations, friends and colleagues of the victims, medical workers were screening people who had offered to donate blood.
