Members of the Islamist terrorist group, Boko Haram, today kidnapped three traditional rulers—called Emirs—in Nigeria’s volatile and violence-plagued northeast. Two of the emirs were later escaped unhurt, but the third, Muhammadu Idrisa Timta, the Emir of Gwoza, died at the hands of the kidnappers. SaharaReporters learnt that Boko Haram gunmen seized the emirs as they made a trip to Gombe, the capital of Gombe State, to attend the funeral of the Emir of Gombe, Shehu Abubakar, who died last Tuesday in London.   “Boko Haram militants ambushed their [emirs’] convoy and kidnapped the traditional rulers,” a security source told SaharaReporters.  Two of the  traditional rulers who escaped were identified as the Emir of Askira, Abdullahi Askirama and the Emir Of Uba, Ismaila Mamza

DR Maryam Abdullahi, a delegate representing Civil Society Organisation, CSO, at the on-going National Conference, Tuesday, accused former military President, Ibrahim Babangida of starting religious crises in Nigeria. Dr Abdullahi said the former military ruler pushed Nigeria into membership of the Organisation of Islamic Conference, OIC, without the consent of the people he was ruling, a development, she said started religious crises in the country. She insisted that the relationship between Christians and Muslims deteriorated when Nigeria was admitted as a full member of Organisation of the Islamic Conference. Abdullahi, specifically said Babangida, who pushed for Nigeria’s full membership of OIC, did that to manipulate religion in order to perpetuate himself in the office, insisting that this was the beginning of mistrust between adherents of the two faith because of mutual suspicion of possible Islamization of Nigeria.

Details have emerged how Boko Haram terrorists disguised as soldiers Tuesday evening stormed a military camp in Bunu Yadi, Borno State, killing 25 soldiers. Bunu Yadi is capital of Gujba local government area of the state. Scores of soldiers sustained serious injuries in the commando-type operation which lasted a few minutes, security sources disclosed. The attackers carted away at least one armoured personnel carrier (APC) and 12 Toyota Hilux jeeps belonging to the Nigerian Army. Military sources said that Boko Haram terrorists in army fatigues had stormed the military base late in the evening. The soldiers, it was gathered, “thought the terrorists were their colleagues from another military base, and came to welcome them.”

Thai police on Wednesday said they had charged five defrocked Buddhist abbots with sexually abusing eight boys at monasteries around the northern city of Chiang Mai. The abuse was discovered after police rescued one boy from the abuse ring last year, police said, adding all the children involved were under 15 years of age. "Four of the abbots volunteered to disrobe, but one denied the charges and was forcibly defrocked," Major General Prachuab Wongsuk, of the northern police region, told AFP. He said police found alcohol and pornography during a search of living quarters at five monasteries. Police believe the abbots were acting together and Prachuab predicted that more monks would be arrested soon. Those charged face a maximum of 20 years in jail if convicted.

The Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Shehu Abubakar, has died at the age of 76.   A statement signed by the Secretary to the Gombe State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Bage, said the emir died at a London hospital on Tuesday.   Bage said burial arrangements of the emir would be announced later by the government.   Born in Doma area of Gombe metropolis in 1938, Abubakar attended Elementary School and Bauchi Middle School. He also attended Barewa College, Zaria in Kaduna State.   The emir started his working career as Engineering Assistant with the defunct Gombe Native Authority.   He later proceeded to the Technical Training Centre, Kaduna Institute of Administration.   Abubakar also worked with the defunct Northern Nigeria, North Eastern Government and the defunct Bauchi State Government where he rose to the rank of a Permanent Secretary, Parastatals, Local governments, Animals, Forestry and Establishment.

  The Benue State Government has dismissed the letters purportedly written by the Boko Haram issuing threats to some schools in the state.  According to the State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, the letters were not written by the terrorist group but by “mischief makers.” The letters carried threats of abductions, raising the spectre of kidnappings following the incidents in Chibok where more than 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped. “I think the letter was from some mischievous people. The way the letter was couched showed it was from some mischievous elements and not from the quarters that it was purported to have come from. In spite of that, I have taken adequate measures to protect the lives of our students,” he said while responding to questions from the media.
