Two die, 3 hospitalised after consuming locally-brewed gin

Two persons have died in Edo State after consuming some quantity of locally-brewed gin popularly called “Ogogoro’’, believed to have been contaminated, a correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports . The correspondent, who visited Ugieda, South Ibie, in the Etsako-West Local Government Area of Edo on Thursday where the incident took place, reports that three persons were hospitalised at an undisclosed health facility, after taking the substance. An eye-witness, Mr Lukman Rilwan, told NAN that the five persons who consumed the local brew, had complained of stomach ache afterwards.

Scientists in Brazil believe the devastating Zika virus may have already crossed over to the common mosquito, dramatically increasing the risk of it spreading worldwide. The Brazilian government is already struggling to contain a growing public health disaster. There are suspicions the mosquito-borne virus is linked to more than 4,000 babies with brain deformities in South America’s largest country. The authorities have called troops out on to the street and deployed teams of health workers to try to combat the spread but so far those at the forefront admit they are nowhere near succeeding.

No improvement in Nigeria’s corruption index – TI

Despite the ongoing war against corruption being waged by President Muhammadu Buhari, global anti-corruption agency, Transparency International, TI, has retained Nigeria in its 136th position out of the 170 countries in its latest ranking of global corruption perception index. Chairman of TI, Jose Ugaz, who disclosed this yesterday after the anti- corruption watchdog released a list of its 2015 corruption perception index, observed that corruption remains a blight around the world. Ugaz stated that 2015 was also a year when people around the world sent a strong signal to those in power that it was time to tackle corruption with various protests across the globe, stressing that more countries, however, improved in 2015.

Sweden To Deport 80,000 Migrants

Sweden’s Interior Minister says the government is planning to expel as many as 80,000 failed asylum-seekers. Anders Ygeman said that charter aircraft would be used to deport the migrants over several years. Some 163,000 migrants applied for asylum in Sweden in 2015, the highest per capital number in Europe of approximately 58,800 cases processed last year, 55 per cent were accepted.

EFCC has Arrested Jide Omokore Over Alleged Multibillion Dollar Deals

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission last Tuesday arrested Jide Omokore, an ally of former president, Goodluck Jonathan, and Chairman of Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Nigeria Limited in connection with a series of multi-billion dollar petrol import and crude export deals. Security sources told Premium Times that Mr Omokore, who is still in EFCC custody, has made revealing statements. Atlantic Energy Limited was one of the companies that received multibillion dollar worth of public assets without due process by the Jonathan administration in 2011.

   Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has confirmed that it would soon begin dialogue with MTN for an out-of-court settlement over the N1.04 trillion fine imposed on the telecommunications company for not deactivating 5.1 million unregistered subscribers. The executive vice chairman, Umar Garba Danbatta, during his first world press conference on Wednesday said that the NCC’s lawyers on Tuesday evening officially communicated to the telecommunications regulator the decision of the presiding judge, Mohammed Idris, handling the suit instituted by MTN against NCC to grant both parties 60 days leave to discuss for an out-of-court settlement.

NUPENG Kicks Against Workers’ Retrenchment In Shell, Chevron

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has opposed the plan by both Chevron and Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to sack 18,500 workers globally, saying such retrenchment was unjustifiable in Nigeria. In a statement signed by its National President, Igwe Achese, the union said it was worried and concerned about the threat of sacking such alarming number of oil workers. It called on the Federal Government to halt the move in Nigeria stressing that such sack threat coming after the companies had fully divested from onshore oil fields, describing the sack as one too many in the country. “It will be morally unjustified for Chevron and Shell to retrench oil workers in Nigeria as they are carting away profits made from deep offshore and joint venture gas projects.

S&P wants naira further devalued

 Naira Notes •Interbank rates hit three-month high Ratings agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P), yesterday reinforced its call for the devaluation of the naira. I said this shouls happen at some stage in 2016 and in gradual adjustments, saying investors have seen a devaluation of the naira as long overdue after the economy was battered by the tumble in crude prices. Despite growing pressure, the government has kept the local currency at around N198 to the dollar on the official interbank market, while restricting access to dollars.

N50 Stamp Duty: CBN Exempts Salary Accounts, Others

Payments of salaries and wages as well as payments and deposits for self-to-self transactions whether inter or intra bank are exempted from the N50 stamp duty policy, the Central Bank (CBN) has said. Malam Ibrahim Mu’azu, CBN Director, Corporate Communications, made the clarification on Thursday in Abuja in a statement issued to newsmen. NAN recalls that the CBN recently introduced the policy which was contained in the Stamp Duty Act, 2004 and the Federal Government of Nigeria’s Financial Regulation of 2009. The policy is part measures to boost tax revenue for the federal government.
