Nice attack: France declares three days of mourning

France declares three days of mourning after at least 84 are killed when an attacker drives lorry into crowds in Nice. France has declared three days of national mourning after at least 84 people were killed in the city of Nice when an attacker drove a lorry into a large crowd celebrating the country's main national holiday. Speaking from Nice on Friday, French President Francois Hollande said around 50 people are in critical condition, still "between life and death" after the attack. Police have identified the suspect on Friday as Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, a 31-year-old man, who is originally from Tunisia. Authorities said he was married with three children. Authorities said Bouhlel, who works as a driver in Nice, rented the lorry he used in the attack five days ago. Bouhlel was known to French police, but not intelligence officials.

Google and Emoji Authorities Put Gender Equality on the Fast Track

A new proposal makes the grade. When a quartet of Google employees recently pushed for emojis to become less male-centric, the organization in charge of authorizing the handy characters took notice. The Unicode Consortium said on Thursday that it would shake things up with urgency. Until now, many emoji have been depicted as men—police officers, for example—while the female characters have been highly stereotyped in other roles, such as hairdressers. By the end of this year, there will be 11 professions with new emoji for both men and women across a variety of skin tones. These include farmers, welders, mechanics, health workers, scientists, coders, business workers, chefs, students, teachers, and rock stars.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has re-assured Nigerians of adequate petroleum products. In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, by NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Alhaji Garba Deen Muhamad, the corporation urged Nigerians to desist fro panic buying. “Members of the public are advised not to engage in panic buying as there is no shortage of petrol. “The corporation has sufficient fuel that will last for over 30 days,” he said Muhamad added that any perceived or visible shortage of petrol was only a ripple effect of the period when the strike was in progress, adding that “it does not represent a shortage in supply.’’

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory on Friday denied the bail application of former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore. The former deputy governor had filed an application for bail, following his arrest and detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC over an alleged N60bn fraud. Omisore, through his lawyer, Chris Uche, SAN, prayed the court to enforce his fundamental human rights, which he claimed, was abused by the EFCC. Uche had yesterday informed the Justice Olukayode Adeniyi-led court that the warrant of arrest and the remand obtained by the EFCC was `mere authority’ and not in line with the constitution.

China tells Japan to stop interfering in South China Sea

The African Union is set to launch the electronic passport (e-Passport) at its summit to be held in Kigali, Rwanda this July. According to an AU statement, the project “first agreed upon in 2014, falls squarely within the framework of Africa’s Agenda 2063 and has the specific aim of facilitating free movement of persons, goods and services around the continent – in order to foster intra-Africa trade, integration and socio-economic development”.
