U.S to spend $1b over Ebola, checks disease in W’Africa with $461m

THE United States(U.S) Government Tuesday reacted to criticisms regarding its alleged ‘half-hearted’ response to the outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in West Africa, saying it has mounted a ‘whole-of-government response that would cost at least $1billion, in addition to the $461million it reportedly spent in fighting to contain and eliminate the epidemic at its source. The US government has been variously criticised in Africa for not doing enough to help the continent contain the malaise and that it shows serious commitment only when the disease threatens its own citizens.

Airlifting of Nigerian pilgrims begins Thursday

AS pilgrims returned Tuesday to their abodes in Makkah after six days of observation Hajj rites in the neighbouring cities of Mina, Arafah and Muzdalifah, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has announced Thursday as the commencement of airlifting of pilgrims back to Nigeria. However, the in-bound flight schedule, according to NAHCON spokesman, Malam Uba Mana, is subject to approval at the post-Arafah meeting billed for Wednesday at Nigeria’s Hajj Mission in Jeddah. At a briefing with tour operators Tuesday at NAHCON Office in Makkah, NAHCON Commissioner in charge of operations, Abdullah Muhammad Mukhtar said the return journey would be completed within 27 days.

Ekiti NUT orders members to shun duty over unpaid salaries

• Oyo teachers blame govt for mass failure in exams AS teachers and students of Ekiti State public and private schools are expected to resume for the 2014/2015 session Wednesday, the state chapter of the Nigeria Union Teachers (NUT) has directed its members to shun their duty posts until the August and September salaries, as well as the July deduction are remitted. Also, the NUT in Oyo State yesterday blamed the state government for the mass failure of pupils in the recently held senior school certificate examination, accusing it of failure to recruit teachers into the primary and secondary schools in the state despite that many had since retired.

APC, PDP trade words over seizure of another $5.7 m in S’Africa

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) Tuesday demanded an explanation from President Goodluck Jonathan over the latest seizure of Nigeria’s $5.7 million in South Africa. Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national leadership has accused the APC of collaborating with some foreign interests to ridicule the country. In a statement issued in Lagos by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, APC urged President Jonathan to stop embarrassing Nigeria in the global community over what it described as phoney transaction.

THE advent of democracy in Nigeria has come with numerous dividends; key amongst these is the benefit of freedom. Freedom of expression, freedom of speech and even freedom to dream. In the dark days of the military rule there were certain dreams which could not even be entertained let alone actualised. The formation of political parties were closely monitored and dare I say overly regulated by the powers that be. The emergence of candidates was (and possibly still remains) a delicate issue. We all still remember vividly the June 12 elections, subsequent result annulment and the entire drama that followed. Thank God for democracy!
