John Legend Calls For More Schools, Less Prisons

The right to vote is central to any movement for social change. In the 1960's, voter registration drives were a central strategy to the civil rights movement and today voting continues to play a pivotal role in our democracy. As someone who cares deeply about education, I felt compelled to make this video increase voter participation and raise awareness of the need to stop the growing school-to-prison pipeline. In the last three decades, prison spending has grown exponentially faster than spending on education. In fact, in California alone, we have built 22 prisons and only 1 UC University since 1980.

Boko Haram Wants Chibok Girls Exchanged With Detained Commanders

Boko Haram has reportedly submitted ‘a specific list’ of detained commanders the sect would want swapped for the Chibok girls to the Federal Government. Part of the cease fire agreement was that the Federal Government would release Boko Haram commanders in its prisons in an exchange for the Chibok girls. However, Punch reports that indications emerged yesterday, 27 October, 2014, that the representatives of the Boko Haram involved in the on-going negotiation have submitted ‘a specific list’ of detained commanders the sect would want swapped for the Chibok girls to the Federal Government team.

South Africa’s Bafana Bafana Goalkeeper Shot Dead

Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates number one goalkeeper and team captain, Senzo Meyiwa was shot dead on October 26th at his girlfriend’s house. According to reports, Meyiwa, 27, who played a match for Orlando Pirates on Saturday night, was at his girlfriend’s house, SA pop star Kelly Khumalo, when three men entered the home in Vosloorus, Johannesburg to rob them. Meyiwa ended up getting shot in the chest. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead. No one else in the house was hurt.

The event which took place around Redeemed Junction along Okpanam community road, Asaba, followed a long relationship between the suspect and the young man, who hails from Ibusa community near Asaba. Report has it that they started dating while they were both in Lagos, until she graduated and was posted to Asaba for her youth service.

Oyo State Reports Outbreak Of Lassa Fever

After having successfully expelled the Ebola virus, Nigeria now faces another health challenge as an outbreak of Lassa fever has been reported in Oyo state, South West Nigeria. The announcement was reportedly made by the state’s commissioner of health, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, who said that as many as 10 cases had been reported. “We are already working to bring it under control. We are doing the best to curtail it. We have what it takes to manage it very well. I only want to appeal to our people to be very hygienic and when they feel that something is wrong with our system, we should go to the hospital for proper diagnosis of their sickness and treatment,” Gbadegesin said.

Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state has reacted to yesterday's statement from the presidency where he was advised to stop political rascality and blackmail. Speaking through the state's Commissioner for Information, Ibim Semenitari, Governor Amaechi said there was never a time he discussed First lady, Dame Patience Jonathan. He also described Presidential Spokesman, Reuben Abati as the rascality within the Presidency "I would want to say that the Presidential Spokesman should be careful for the kind of threats he issues to an elected Governor. He should remember that the President is not a prefect of the governor. He was elected as President just as the Governor was elected as a governor, and Nigeria is a federation. And please, Abati should know his limits and need not attempt to cross his boundaries.
