New missing Malaysian plane MH370 search area announced

A new search area for the missing Malaysian plane has been announced by the Australian government after further analysis of satellite data. The search will now shift south to focus on an area 1,800km (1,100 miles) off the west coast of Australia, Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss confirmed. Flight MH370 vanished en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on 8 March with 239 passengers on board. Officials said they believed the plane had been on autopilot when it crashed. A 64-page report  released by the Australian government concluded that the underwater search for the plane should resume in the new 60,000 sq km area.

Boateng and Muntari expelled by Ghana

Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng have been expelled from Ghana's World Cup squad for alleged indiscipline. A statement on the  Ghana Football Association website    said both players had "been suspended indefinitely". It added Boateng had used "vulgar verbal insults targeted at coach Kwesi Appiah" and said Muntari was guilty of an "unprovoked physical attack on an executive committee member". The news comes just hours before Ghana take on Portugal on Thursday. The Black Stars still have an outside chance of qualifying for the knockout phase of the tournament.

Breaking News: Luis Suarez banned for four months

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has been suspended from all football-related activity for four months for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini. The 27-year-old Liverpool player has also been banned for nine international matches, ruling him out of the rest of the 2014 Fifa World Cup. 144 of 486 Abia suspects released

THE Federal Government has said 144 of 486 intercepted travellers to Abia State have been released. The coordinator, National Information Centre, Mr Mike Omeri, disclosed this on Wednesday, while briefing the press on the current security situation in the country. He said one of the suspects connected with Boko Haram had been named and investigation was ongoing to unravel the circumstances. Speaking on the alleged abduction of the 60 women and children in Borno, last week, Omeri objected, adding that nothing on the ground could prove it. “Our findings also corroborated the position of the Borno State government, as conveyed by Governor Kashim Shettima, who said that there are no sufficient facts on the alleged abduction of 60 persons.”

16 soldiers feared killed in Borno

SUSPECTED members of Boko Haram, on Tuesday, attacked a military post in Bulabulin Ngaura of Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State and killed about 16 soldiers. One of the soldiers that narrowly escaped the attack told journalists in Maiduguri that they were subdued.  “Some of my colleagues were abducted and many others escaped with bullet wounds. Dozens of Boko Haram insurgents stormed our checkpoint at Bulabulin. The terrorists came in a convoy of over 30 vehicles, mounted with anti-aircraft guns,” he said. On how he escaped, he said: “I was at the checkpoint when the terrorists came. We tried our best, but they had advantage over us. They had anti-aircraft guns and we had Ak-47 rifles not fully loaded.  “When we realised that they had taken over the place, some of us escaped to Maiduguri and other places, but many could not make it.  “As I am talking to you, 16 bodies of our colleagues have been brought to Maiduguri, this is besides those that sustained injuries

Explosion rocks gas plant in Lagos, 4 feared dead, 4 buildings, 2 banks affected

AN explosion occurred  on Wednesday, in Lagos, with about four persons feared dead.‬‬ ‪‪Spokesperson of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) South-West, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the blast but said it was from a gas-depot.‬‬ ‪‪He disclosed that the blast occurred at about 9.15 pm.‬‬ ‪‪The ever-busy Creek Road, Apapa, Lagos was reportedly thrown into pandemoniun when the blast occured.‬‬ ‪‪The explosives-laden car reportedly went off at Folawiyo Fuel Depot.‬‬ ‪‪The blast reportedly affected four buildings, including two banks.‬‬ ‪‪As at press time, it was gathered that no fewer than four people were feared killed in the blast.‬‬ ‪‪Farinloye, however, said that: "There was gas cylinder explosion at 26, off Creek road, Apapa at about 9:15 p.m." "People were reported to be filling gas into the cylinder before it exploded. FOR the first time in 16 years, Nigeria will be playing in the second round of the World Cup despite losing the final Group F match  3-2 to  Argentina at Port Allegri on Wednesday. Thanks to a 1-0 win over Bosnia last Saturday night, Nigeria finished on four points having earlier drawn goalless with Iran in the first group match. Abuja Blasts: Soldiers Kill One Suspect, Arrest Another

The Coordinator, National Information Centre, Mr Mike Omeri, said on Wednesday that soldiers killed one of the suspected bombers of EMAB Plaza in Abuja and arrested another. Omeri told newsmen in Abuja that the attackers came on a power bike and planted an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) by the entrance of the shopping mall. He also confirmed the death of 21 persons and 17 others injured in the blast which also damaged several vehicles. NAN gathered that the suspects, who attempted to flee the scene of the incident, were shot and arrested by personnel of the Guards Brigade on patrol duty in the area. One of them later died from wounds sustained from gunshots while a bag containing IEDs was also recovered from the suspects.
