Well, hello! Adele returns to Bay Area

Image
The wait is over. Adele is on her first North American tour in five years, and she is rewarding Bay Area fans for their patience with not one, not two, but three local shows. The British pop singer performs at SAP Center in San Jose on Saturday, July 30, and Sunday, July 31, then moves to Oracle Arena in Oakland on Tuesday, Aug. 2. Tickets for the shows in support of her most recent album, “25,” which sold a record-breaking 3.4 million copies in its first week, were snatched up as soon as they went on sale in December. The lucky few who scored a pair get to see a singer who has a singular ability for making even the biggest room feel intimate with her crass jokes and that voice that makes everyone’s knees go weak. Adele:  7:30 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, July 30-31. $39.95-$157. SAP Center, 525 W. Santa Clara St., San Jose. 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2. Oracle Arena, 7000 Coliseum Way, Oakland. www.ticketmaster.com

Kevin Hart to draw crowds during Bay Area stops

Image
Kevin Hart is coming to the Bay Area, and you won’t need a telescope to see him. The popular stand-up comic and movie star (“Central Intelligence,” “Ride Along,” the very underrated “Soul Plane”) has played sports arenas and sold more than 50,000 seats last year at the Lincoln Financial Field in his native Philadelphia, becoming the first stand-up comedian to headline a football stadium. By contrast, his Sunday, July 31, and Tuesday, Aug. 2, shows at the Concord Pavilion and Stockton Arena, respectively, almost qualify as intimate. His Monday, Aug. 1, show at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga is definitely a rare treat. Bigger venues haven’t translated to a bigger head. Audience connection and relatability are still two of his biggest attributes, even as he has become one of the most popular comics on the planet. Kevin Hart:  8 p.m. Sunday, July 31. $39.50-$128.50. Concord Pavilion, 2000 Kirker Pass Road, Concord. (925) 676-8742. www.livenation.com 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug.

For The Love Of God, Stop Playing Pokémon Go At Rihanna And Beyoncé Concerts

Image
Sure, most people now watch concerts through a Snapchat filter, but at least they’re not totally distracted by the thought of catching a Dratini. (Side note: if the fan in question succeeded in finding a Dratini, she’s excused). Meanwhile, at a recent concert in Lille, France, Rihanna also instructed her fans to put down the Pokémon and concentrate on the live show unfolding in front of their eyes.   “I don’t want to see you texting your boyfriends or your girlfriends,” Rih said in a video. “I don’t want to see you catching any Pokémons up in this bitch.”

Judge tosses $20M suit filed against Christian Slater by his dad

Image
A Los Angeles judge has canceled the $20 million slander lawsuit filed by Christian Slater's father against the "Mr. Robot" actor. Judge Suzanne Bruguera made the ruling after dad Thomas Knight Slater, 77, appeared without a lawyer Monday and addressed the court with a prepared speech. "While the defendant has a right to freedom of speech, he has no right to slander and defame me," he said in a booming voice that the judge asked him to lower at one point. In her ruling, Judge Bruguera found that Thomas Slater's case lacked "significant legal grounding" and likely wouldn't prevail on its merits. "I will be appealing this," the dad said after the hearing. "Christian is not going to get away with this." Thomas Slater filed his complaint in February claiming his ex-wife Mary Jo Slater and their "Heathers" actor son destroyed his decades-long acting career with public claims he is a manic-depressive sc

Negredo, Gomes Gone: Valencia Hit the Reset Button Ahead of Defining Season

Image
The cover from Superdeporte was distasteful and tinged with nastiness, but concurrently, with two simple words it reflected a certain relief that promised change was coming.   "Gracias, Boro," it read.  The snide gratitude followed the news that Valencia had agreed to a deal with Middlesbrough for a one-year loan of Alvaro Negredo, the expensive and misfiring striker who had been so emblematic of Valencia's turmoil.  Two years earlier when he'd been signed, Superdeporte's cover had depicted Negredo as the centrepiece in a "forward line of champions" that also featured Paco Alcacer and Rodrigo Moreno. His move involved big money and big potential at a club that had the exactly that itself thanks to the wealth of new owner Peter Lim. But that potential never materialised; already, Negredo is gone, for now at least. And he's not the only one. This had long loomed as a key summer for Valencia, and the look of restructuring is obvious.

South Sudan's president replaces rival deputy Machar amid fears of new civil war

Image
South Sudanese President Salva Kiir on Monday replaced his vice president and rival Riek Machar, a move that could potentially undermine last year’s peace deal and reignite war in Africa’s youngest nation. Kiir said he appointed General Taban Deng to the post of “first vice president of the republic of South Sudan", according to a statement read on the country’s national broadcaster. The appointment followed an earlier announcement that Machar’s own rebel group had replaced their leader with General Deng. Machar fled Juba this month after Kiir's forces bombed his house during the clashes that killed hundreds of people and has remained in hiding. Scandal: Father Mbaka makes true confession on his affair with Jonathan

Image
Rev Fr Ejike Mbaka said on Sunday, July 24, that his detractors are after him because of his 2015 prophesy which came to fulfillment with the dawn of change in the country. The charismatic Catholic cleric disclosed that he had nothing to regret over his 2015 prophesy of change, where he had predicted that former President Goodluck Jonathan would be defeated in the presidential election. Mbaka equally dismissed as baseless the claims that he fell apart with Jonathan over the latter’s refusal of his request for an oil well. The outspoken priest who spoke through his media aide, Barr Maximus Ike Ugwuoke on the sidelines of the activities ahead of his 21 years priestly ordination anniversary, said he would not regret the 2015 change prophesy despite the current sufferings Nigerians were experiencing. Instead, he recalled that he had also on several occasions released prophecies on the current hard times bedeviling the nation. The priest, however, maintained that the previous administratio
