India has 18 million modern slaves—at least five times more than any other country in the world

India is home to the largest number of enslaved people in the world. A little over 18 million people—equal to the entire population of Chile—are victims of modern slavery in Asia’s third-largest economy, according to the Global Slavery Index (pdf), published by Australia-based human rights group Walk Free Foundation. Such persons are often engaged in domestic work, construction, farming, fishing, manual labour, forced begging, and in the sex industry. The index defines modern slavery as a situation where “a person cannot refuse or leave because of threats, violence, coercion, abuse of power or deception, with treatment akin to a farm animal.” This also includes victims of human trafficking, forced labour, debt bondage, forced or servile marriage, and the sale and exploitation of children.

The Afro pop artiste has been slammed a court injunction by his label following claims of fraudulent practices.     Runtown  According to reports, a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has slammed an injunction against rising musical artiste Douglas Jack-Agu aka Runtown. The injunction prevents him from performing at any event or any form of recording for the time being unless with the approval of Ericmany Limited. Runtown is signed under the Ericmany Entertainment label that presently holds the copyright to all his music. He was sued in the Federal High Court by Ericmany on allegations that he signs up, concludes and attends musical shows without the knowledge of the label.

The Nigerian Stock Exchange data showed that the NSE market capitalisation on May 28, 2015 was N11.658tn, while that of May 27, 2016 was N9.926tn. Osinbajo to inaugurate prosecution committee

No peace talks; 'terror on enemies' will continue - New Taliban leader

Switzerland to repatriate $230 million stolen from Nigeria

The governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, yesterday declared a state-of-emergency on the tomato in the state, saying that 80 per cent of tomato farms in the state have been ravaged by an exotic pest, called tomato blight ( Tuta Absoluta) with over 200 farmers in three local government areas of the state losing about N1billion. el-Rufai who addressed newsmen at the Correspondent Chapel through his Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry yesterday said, already some officials of the ministry have been sent to Kenya to liaise with experts and return with a solution.

NNPC failed to remit N2.23trn to federation account in 2005 – 2013 – NEITI

  Minister of solid minerals and chairman of Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), Kayode Fayemi, has disclosed the non-remittance of $12.9 billion (N2.23trn) by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to the Federal Government between 2005 and 2013. The disclosure, which was contained in an audit report carried out by NEITI and focused on all aspects of the extractive industries, showed that the funds were the sum of dividends, interest and loan payment from the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG). The report indicted the NNPC for failing to remit $3.8 billion revenues for itself and its subunit in 2013.
