SEVERAL community and militant groups in Delta State have sent a warning to incoming president General Muhammadu Buhari that they will not accept the exclusion of the Niger Delta people in the allocation of oil blocks in Nigeria. With the victory of General Buhari at Nigeria's recent presidential elections, fears have been raised about Niger Delta militants resuming their war with the state.

A 100-year-old Japanese woman has become the world’s first centenarian to complete a 1,500-metre freestyle swim, 20 years after she took up the sport. Mieko Nagaoka took just under an hour and 16 minutes to finish the race as the sole competitor in the 100 – 104-year-old category at a short course pool in Ehime, western Japan, on Saturday. “I want to swim until I turn 105 if I can live that long,” the sprightly Nagaoka told Kyodo News.

Nigeria releases detained Al-Jazeera journalists

Al-Jazeera Doha - Two Al-Jazeera television journalists who had been detained by the Nigerian military since March 24 have been freed, the Qatar-based broadcaster said in a statement on Sunday. It said Ahmed Idris and Ali Mustafa had been allowed to leave the Maiduguri hotel where they were detained, and return to the network's Abuja office. "We're pleased for Ahmed and Ali that their ordeal is over," said Salah Negm, director of news for Al-Jazeera English.

Emenike in ‘shock’ after Fenerbahce bus shooting

Nigeria striker Emmanuel Emenike says he and his Fenerbahce team-mates were left in shock after their team bus was shot at by a gunman on Saturday night in Turkey. The Turkish league leaders were travelling to Trabzon airport to fly back to Istanbul, following their 5-1 victory over Rizespor, when the shooting happened. The driver was taken to hospital but no players were injured in the attack, which Emenike described as a “scary moment”.
