US election: Ted Cruz defeats Donald Trump in closely fought Iowa caucus

The upset for the billionaire entrepreneur puts Cruz a step closer to the Republican nomination for November's presidential race. Iowan Democrats and Republicans are the first in the US to vote on who they want to be their party's candidate to succeed Barack Obama. Even the most recent polls predicted The Donald would take the caucus by a margin of 3%.

Despite Supreme Court’s verdict, Uba, Oduah Attend Senate Functions

  In spite of last week’s verdict of the Supreme Court which affected their status, the duo of Senators Andy Uba and Stella Oduah were yesterday spotted within the National Assembly moving from one office to the other, conducting legislative businesses and attending committee functions. Uba in particular was spotted at the meeting of the Senate Joint Committees on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, while Senator Uduah was cited visiting different offices and attending to files when our correspondent sneaked into her office.

Jonathan Bought Second-Hand Ammunitions To Fight Boko Haram – Lai Mohammed

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan bought sub-standard and below grade weapons to prosecute fight against Boko Haram, Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has said. Mohammed was reacting to a statement credited to former president Goodluck Jonathan that the weapons procured by his administration are currently being used in the war against Boko Haram. In a statement issued on Monday, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Mohammed said the weapons Jonathan procured were substandard and expired, which “could not have been responsible for the string of successes recorded by the military in recent times”.

One week after calling on the National Assembly to be more prudent and transparent, former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday reiterated that corruption must be kicked out of the country because it has destroyed all spheres of the society. The former president, who was the chairman at the inaugural conference of the Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy (ISGPP), said the malaise manifests in corruption of money, attitude, nepotism and favouritism.

EFCC Raids Former VP Sambo’s Office In Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the weekend carried out a raid on the Abuja office of former Vice President Namadi Sambo, action official sources said was not unconnected with the ongoing probe of the arms deal fraud. Sambo, the number two figure in the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan, was alleged to have been a beneficiary of the looted arms fund believed to have been allocated to his office from the office of the embattled former national security adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki.

WHO declares global emergency over Zika virus spread

 The World Health Organization declared a global emergency over the explosive spread of the Zika virus, which has been linked to birth defects in the Americas, calling it an "extraordinary event" that poses a public health threat to other parts of the world. The U.N. agency took the rare step despite a lack of definitive evidence proving the mosquito-borne virus is causing a surge in babies born with brain defects and abnormally small heads in Brazil and following a 2013-14 outbreak in French Polynesia.
