BREAKING: Boko Haram Video: Army declares journalist, two others wanted

Image
Ahmed Salkida, a Nigerian journalist prominent for his access to the extremist Boko Haram sect has been declared wanted by the Nigerian Army. The Army in a post on its Twitter page on Sunday did not immediately give reasons for the announcement. Also declared wanted were Ahmed Bolori and Aisha Wakil. Ms. Wakil, a lawyer, was in contact with the Nigerian government during the 2013 amnesty negotiations with the Boko Haram insurgents. She is believed to have met with former President Goodluck Jonathan at the time as part of the negotiation, which later broke down. Mr. Bolori is known as coordinator of the Fa’ash Foundation and the Partnership Against Violent Extremism (Pave). He lives in Maiduguri, Boko Haram’s birthplace and the epicentre of its insurgency. He witnessed the rise of the terror group, which turned violent in 2009. Security analysts told PREMIUM TIMES the development might not be unconnected with the video that was released today, which the Army deemed as a propaganda for

Afghan officials: IS expands presence in restive south

Image
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) — The Islamic State group, which has been building a presence in Afghanistan for more than a year, has established a recruitment and training camp in a restive southern province bordering Pakistan, Afghan officials said. Last year, hundreds of insurgents fled to Afghanistan from neighboring Pakistan, where the military launched a campaign to clear militants from the lawless tribal regions in the country's north. Among them were members of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, who joined forces with local Taliban fighters to attack northern Afghan cities such as Kunduz, which was briefly overrun in September. The Pakistani military campaign also caused around 400 families loyal to the Islamic State group to flee to Afghanistan, Afghan authorities said. The families, many of them Arabs and Chechens, settled in the southern province of Zabul, in the district of Khak-e-Afghan, a former Taliban stronghold with a history of militant violence that has

More carnage in Manila: The bloodied body of a dealer lies in the street after he is shot dead by police as the Philippines' brutal war on narcotics intensifies

Image
A suspected drug dealer was killed after resisting arrest in the Philippines as the country continues its bloody war on narcotics. Pictures have emerged of a man lying bloodied and motionless on the streets of Manila after he reportedly fought back during a drug bust operation. It is thought he died at the scene. It is the latest in a spate of killings of suspected drug dealers in the Philippines after President Rodrigo Duterte warned of widespread bloodshed as part of the government's war on drugs. According to media reports, nearly a thousand people have been killed since President Duterte won a landslide election victory in May, largely on a pledge to kill tens of thousands of criminals. 'These sons of w****s are destroying our children. I warn you, don't go into that, even if you're a policeman, because I will really kill you,' the president told an audience during a speech in Manila. He vowed on one occasion during the election campaign that

Donald Trump thinks he’d be beating Hillary by ‘20%’ in the polls if not for the ‘disgusting’ media

Image
Donald Trump isn’t even in the Oval Office, but he’s already declared war — on the media. The stumbling 70-year-old GOP nominee took to his favorite micro-blogging platform Sunday morning to levy a barrage of insults at The New york Times, calling a Sunday report in “The Gray Lady” that detailed widespread dysfunction inside the mogul’s campaign “fiction.” “If the disgusting and corrupt media covered me honestly … I would be beating Hillary by 20%,” Trump contended in one of many angry tweets. In just the latest report to indicate ongoing infighting and a lack of consistent messaging inside the Trump campaign, The Times reported Sunday that a “sullen and erratic” Trump often “veers from barking at members of his staff to grumbling about how he was better off following his own instincts during the primaries.” Trump in the last few weeks alone has repeatedly insulted Gold Star parents, encouraged Russian hackers to find Hillary Clinton’s deleted emails and proposed that th

Juan Mata scored Man Utd's first Premier League goal under Jose Mourinho and Twitter loved it

Image
It was just inevitable that Juan Mata would score the first goal of the Jose Mourinho era at Manchester United, wasn’t it? It all came from a horrible backpass from Bournemouth’s Simon Francis during their opening match of the season, which Artur Boruc almost dealt with before Mata was presented with a simple tap-in to put United 1-0 up. Imagine hitting a backpass so slowly that Juan Mata outpaces your goalkeeper — James (@GegenExpress) August 14, 2016 Mourinho and Mata, of course, have bucketloads of backstory. The Portuguese sold Mata to United when he was Chelsea boss, and last week served him the indignity of being a substitute who got subbed off in the Community Shield. The Wayne Rooney haters were out in full force on Twitter... and then he scored

Image
Wayne Rooney has got pretty used to having the last laugh when it comes to football. The England skipper endured a miserable summer – remember that whole Euro 2016 thing? – when about the only conclusive thing he did was to prove that he ain’t no midfield schemer. So when he lined up behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the creative force in Manchester United’s brave new era under Jose Mourinho, people were sceptical. A near anonymous first 45 minutes later and the haters were already lining up to declare his demise. — Manon Blackbeak (@_Mxbel)August 14, 2016 Rooney has been a great servant for United, I applaud that. But you have to earn your position based on performances, not on rep. — Stephen (@ShadeMUFC) August 14, 2016 Anyone else think that Rooney should be a Centre Back? He's brilliant at breaking up play and stopping attacks — Sibs (@SibsMUFC) August 14, 2016 If Man U wanna aim high they should get rid of Rooney. — ㅤㅤnonce (@SakhosPasses) August 14, 2016

Zlatan Ibrahimovic enjoys dream debut for Manchester United

Image
Bournemouth 1 Manchester United 3 Zlatan Ibrahimovic marked his Premier League debut with a goal as Jose Mourinho's Manchester United tenure began with a convincing 3-1 victory over Bournemouth. The match was Mourinho's first Premier League game in charge of United but nevertheless Ibrahimovic arrived as the star attraction on the south coast and the Swede did not disappoint, unleashing a superb long-range strike in the second half. He has now scored on debut in Serie A, LaLiga, Ligue 1 and the Champions League. Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney's goals had earlier put United in command before Bournemouth defender Adam Smith added what proved only to be a consolation. Mourinho has spent almost £150m turning United into title contenders this summer but with £89m man Paul Pogba suspended and Henrikh Mkhitaryan starting on the bench, it was left to Ibrahimovic to provide the blockbuster appeal. The 34-year-old has previously plied his trade for Ajax, Juventus, Inter

Pope treats Rome's homeless to swim at beach, then a pizza

Image
VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis this summer is treating dozens of Rome's homeless to a day at the beach and dinner in a pizzeria on the way back. The pontiff's almsgiver, Polish monsignor Konrad Krajewski, told the La Stampa daily he drives a van with 10 people to a beach near Rome for a dip in the sea, sunbathing and then pizza. The Vatican supplies the swimsuits and beach towels. Krajewski told Italian state radio Sunday the afternoon outings reflect the homeless' "desire for normality" in their lives. Many of them live near Vatican City, where, at Francis' direction, showers and barbers have been set up on the edge of St. Peter's Square for their use. Aided by Swiss Guards, the almsgiver also distributes hot meals to homeless people at Italian train stations. Read the Original

Chibok girls: Boko Haram video purports to show captives

Image
One of the girls is seen answering questions posed by a militant The Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram has released a video purporting to show some of the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls. Some 50 girls wearing headscarves are seen behind a Boko Haram militant who demands the release of fighters in return for freeing the girls. The militant also says some of the girls have been killed in air strikes. The group seized 276 final-year girls from their school in the northern town of Chibok in April 2014. Boko Haram is believed to still be holding more than 200 of those kidnapped. The video begins with a shot of a masked man, carrying a gun, speaking to the camera. He says that some of the girls have been wounded and have life-threatening injuries, and that 40 have been "married". "We don't want to do anything with these girls, our demand remains the same," he says in the Hausa language. "We want the government to release our fighters who have been in detention f
