The Wayne Rooney haters were out in full force on Twitter... and then he scored


Wayne Rooney has got pretty used to having the last laugh when it comes to football.
The England skipper endured a miserable summer – remember that whole Euro 2016 thing? – when about the only conclusive thing he did was to prove that he ain’t no midfield schemer.
So when he lined up behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the creative force in Manchester United’s brave new era under Jose Mourinho, people were sceptical. A near anonymous first 45 minutes later and the haters were already lining up to declare his demise.

Their mood was hardly helped when Rooney spurned a glorious chance after some audacious Zlatan trickery.
The enigmatic striker somehow directed a back-heel lob over the defence to send Rooney into a one-on-one with Cherries goalkeeper Artur Boruc… who saved the United man’s fumbled shot.

But then, just as Twitter was starting to get into full meltdown mode, Rooney scored.
It wasn’t a pretty goal, but he scored. The haters disappeared.
