The presidential candidate of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), on Tuesday gained an unusual support as the main agitating militant group in the Niger Delta, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), pledged its total support for the former military ruler. MEND, in a lengthy press statement circulated through email by its spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, anchored its decision on the need to deliver Nigeria, especially the Niger Delta region, from the crunching effects of corruption. It also lamented the unconcerned attitude of the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration at the unrelenting degradation of the Niger Delta environment, taking a hard stance on the increasing level of oil theft in the region.

Buhari Stormed the on-going APC mega rally in Portharcourt in a GEJ signature which has left a lot of tongues wagging. One thing we however can’t take away from the presidential candidate is that he looks very good in the outfit.

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has demanded from the Federal Government, an immediate reduction in the pump price of petroleum products in view of the crash of the price of crude oil in the international market. In a statement issued in Ibadan on Sunday by its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olawale Sadare, the APC recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan and his economic management team arrived at N97 per litre of PMS in 2012 citing skyrocketing prices of crude oil in the global market, which necessarily rubbed on high landing cost of imported petroleum products particularly the premium motor spirit otherwise known as petrol.

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), yesterday, embarked on an indefinite strike, shutting down courts across the country. The strike was hinged on the failure of state governments to implement the orders of an Abuja Federal High Court, which granted financial autonomy for judiciaries across the country. Justice Adeniyi Ademola had on January 14, 2014, following a suit by JUSUN, restrained the Federal Government and the 36 state governors from holding on to funds meant for the judiciary. He held that funds meant for the judiciary should instead be disbursed directly to the heads of court and not to the executive arm of government.

Senate President David Mark, on Monday expressed his condolence to President Goodluck Jonathan over the demise of his younger sister, Mrs. Nancy Jonathan- Olei in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state. The senate president, in the condolence message, which he personally signed, expressed sadness over the untimely death of Nancy. According to him, her death has robbed the nation of her worthy enterprise. He, however, urged them to take solace in the fact that although the late Nancy lived a short life, she left a good legacy and indeed impacted positively on her immediate environment. Mark said, “I received the news of the death of your dear sister with shock. I earnestly identify with you and share in this painful loss. I pray that the good Lord gives you the fortitude to bear this pain and grant our beloved sister eternal rest in His bosom”.

Minister of State for Works, Mr Dayo Adeyeye, has insisted that General Buhari must prove his innocence in the certificate saga, by producing his original certificates. He stated that Buhari’s failure to produce his certificates would amount to a clear confirmation that he had something to hide. The minister said Buhari must provide evidence that he was qualified to contest the election, as prescribed by the 1999 Constitution. According to him, the affidavit sworn to by Buhari was meaningless, because the military could not keep the original certificates of an officer.

Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has dissociated itself from a controversial New Year message given by one of its priests who is the founder of Adoration Ministry, Enugu (AMEN) Rev. Fr Ejike Mbaka where he described President Jonathan’s administration as one that has been plagued with bad luck and poor performance. The CBCN President, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigam, in an interview with ThisDay clari…fied that Fr Mbaka’s remarks were not a representation of the position of the Catholic Church in Nigeria, stressing that Fr Mbaka merely numbers among the 30 million Catholic faithfuls in Nigeria. He added that the position of the Catholic Church on any matter of national importance can only be communicated through the CBCN.
