Human Rights Activist and maritime lawyer, Dr Olisa Agbakoba, on Monday urged the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to begin his administration with the rebuilding of the nation. Agbakoba made the plea in an interview with NAN in Lagos. He said it was necessary and important that Buhari made an emergency proclamation before the National Assembly to enable him tackle the foundational problems before any meaningful structure could be built.

A former Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe, on Tuesday announced his intention to join the All Progressive Congress (APC). Orubebe, who threw caution to the wind and accused the Independent National Electoral Commission chief, Prof. Attahiru Jega, of bias during the collation of presidential election results in March, said there was need for him to join the APC in order to make Niger Delta better in the new dispensation.

It was the morning uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) operative, Solomon Mahlangu, was executed by the apartheid government at the then Pretoria Central Prison. I will never forget the feeling I had that morning when my late elder brother told me about the brutal hanging of Mahlangu, who I came to know through frequent Rand Daily Mail’s headlines and news-breaking stories. I remember clearly that I couldn’t sleep properly that night, haunted by the barbaric nature of the execution, and tarnished by living in a country run by a government that hanged its people. Nigeria’s incoming government searches for new policy direction

The Nigeria’s opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), which forms the new government from May 29, has commenced consultation on the new policy direction for the incoming administration. The party, which produced the next President after the defeat of President Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday embarked on a two-day policy dialogue in Abuja to unveil the roadmap. Jonathan, who spent six years in office hinged his policy direction on a seven-point Transformation Agenda, which included agriculture, security, employment, power and infrastructure.

We welcome any African who comes to visit us to work and learn as long as they are happy to obey our laws,” he said. His comments came as South Africa’s government was clamping down on illegal foreigners and tightening visa restrictions in its bid to curb xenophobia.

47th ECOWAS Summit Opens In Accra Today

The 47th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State of ECOWAS opens in Accra today. The Summit will focus on security in the sub region, with special focus on Boko Haram, elections in some West African countries, Ebola and the 40th anniversary of ECOWAS, the successes, challenges and the way forward. Presidents so far in town are Ibrahim Boubacar Keita of Mali, Transitional President of Burkina Faso, Michel Kanfado and the President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Others are expected to arrive before the program begins.

More than 50 dead, dozens injured in Colombia landslide

 A landslide sent mud and water crashing onto homes in a town in Colombia's northwest mountains on Monday, killing more than 50 people and injuring dozens, officials said. "The earth slid into the course of the La Liboriana ravine, then the dammed water caused an avalanche which destroyed everything in its path" in Salgar in Antioquia department, regional police commander Jose Angel Mendoza said in an interview.

President Goodluck Jonathan has relieved Mrs Saratu Altine Umar of her job as executive secretary and chief executive officer of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC). Govs ask Okonjo-Iweala to give account of over $20b of excess crude account in 3 years

THE thirty- Six State Governors under the aegis of Nigeria Governors’s Forum, NGF yesterday asked the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala to as a matter of urgency account for the money that were accruable to the Excess Crude Account which they put at over $ 20 billion. Rising from a meeting in Abuja yesterday, the Governors urged the minister to explain how much of this money entered the said account in three years from June 2013 to April 2015, adding that funds in the excess crude were last disbursed in May 2103.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho rejected a potential return to Real Madrid as manager, according to Spanish sports writer, Guillem Balague. The Blues, who had Cesc Fabregas sent off, saw their 16-match unbeaten run ended by two goals from Saido Berahino and one from Chris Brunt. Mourinho, whose side won the title with three matches to spare, acknowledged he and his players were “guilty”. But he added: “I think the top contenders are also guilty because they let us win the title so early.”
