47th ECOWAS Summit Opens In Accra Today


The 47th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State of ECOWAS opens in Accra today.

The Summit will focus on security in the sub region, with special focus on Boko Haram, elections in some West African countries, Ebola and the 40th anniversary of ECOWAS, the successes, challenges and the way forward.

Presidents so far in town are Ibrahim Boubacar Keita of Mali, Transitional President of Burkina Faso, Michel Kanfado and the President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Others are expected to arrive before the program begins.

Meanwhile, the Police have announced the closure of some major roads to the public due to the ECOWAS Summit taking place today.

The Liberation Road from Accra towards the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange will be partitioned into two with traffic from Accra using the outer lane and the dignitaries taking the inner.

After 2pm, the arrangement will shift to the other lane from Opeibea House to AU circle, with motorists plying the outer lane and dignitaries using the inner lane.

Speaking to Radio Ghana, Director General in Charge of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Ampah Bennin said the traffic police will be deployed at vantage points to assist road users.

He asked motorist to comply with all directives to ensure order and safety.

In a related development, a Senior Research Fellow at the Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy LECIAD, Dr Vladmir Antwi Danso has called on ECOWAS Heads of State to focus on the instability within the West African sub-region.

He said if the 15 West African countries will put all their efforts into integration, domestic challenges will be solved with ease.

Dr Antwi Danso in an interview advised that people who are sent on diplomatic assignments to ECOWAS countries to develop interest in Regional Integration.
