He said his appointment as a board member of the African Cancer Centre made him undergo a routine checkup last year which revealed he had cancer. He said he diagnosed with the disease in December 2013. “It never occurred to me to test myself because men have their separate test like women and I have heard people who lost very dear ones, closed ones. They just told me, ‘Prof, we hope you’re having your own?’ And I told them I had one 10 years ago and he said, “No, no, do it regularly.” And by accident in December last year, I discovered that I had cancer.” Prof Soyinka who is cancer free now after undergoing a vigorous treatment that ended in October this year, said although he was uncomfortable speaking about his experience, he was obligated to speak about it now so as to get rid of the public perception that being diagnosed with cancer is a death sentence

A fake female suicide bomber was taken into custody by the police in Kano Monday, following a bomb scare. An eyewitness told Vanguard that the incident occurred around 12.30p.m. when the police guard on duty at Kwali Police Division suspected a strange middle-aged woman in Burqa (veil) heading to the station. Hopes of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winning Rivers State in 2015 was further threatened Monday with the attempted disqualification of at least 12 governorship aspirants by the party’s screening committee. Also under threat of disqualification were over 140 out of over 170 aspirants for the state House of Assembly. Only 32 aspirants believed to be Wike’s loyalists were okayed by the screening panel to contest the primaries for the 32 State Assembly Constituency seats, suggesting they might emerge “unopposed.” According to the Gubernatorial screening panel, all the aspirants were to be barred from contesting the primary elections because they were not registered PDP members in their respective wards, just as their names allegedly weren’t on the “list of CTC of members of the party in (their respective) wards.”
