Liberia has shortage of body bags, supplies to fight Ebola outbreak

This is the messy truth about Ebola  As the world reels from its worst Ebola outbreak, the nation hardest hit is declaring a shortage of body bags, which are crucial to preventing the spread of the deadly virus. Liberia, one of three countries most affected by the outbreak, said it has 4,900 body bags nationwide. It needs 85,000 more in the next six months, the Health Ministry said in a statement. A grim inventory of supplies shows body bags were not the only items lacking. Liberia is also experiencing a shortage of other supplies needed to fight the virus, including protective suits, face masks, gloves and goggles.

Brands on Sale is advertising the "Ebola containment suit costume, a kit that includes a protective bodysuit, goggles and breathing mask. Johnathon Weeks, the company's vice president, says they sold about two dozen on Wednesday and expect to move well over a thousand by the end of the month.

Breaking News: Nigeria and Boko Haram 'agree truce'

The Federal Government of Nigeria says it has reached a ceasefire deal with the Boko Haram sect. The Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, has therefore ordered all service chiefs to comply with the ceasefire agreement between Nigeria and Boko Haram in all theaters of operations. The Principal Private Secretary to the President, Ambassador Hassan Tukur, met with Chadian Government officials as well as representatives of the Boko Haram sect in N’Djamena, Chad on Friday morning. Securing the release of the 219 Chibok girls abducted by Boko Haram was a major part of the discussions. The Boko Haram sect was represented by Danladi Ahmadu at the meeting.

 South African track star Oscar Pistorius should serve at least 10 years in prison for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine's Day last year, state prosecutor Gerrie Nel said at the close of the athlete's sentencing hearing on Friday. "The minimum term that society will be happy with will be 10 years imprisonment," Nel said. "This is a serious matter. The negligence borders on intent. Ten years is the minimum." The 27-year-old Paralympic and Olympic athlete, whose lower legs were amputated as a baby, was convicted of culpable homicide last month for the shooting of 29-year-old law graduate and model Steenkamp.

Missing actress Misty Upham found dead, family confirms

The body of a woman found in a ravine near the White River has been confirmed to be missing actress Misty Upham, a family spokesperson has confirmed. Rex Features Upham's father itentified her body to authorities following a search of the area by friends and family. There is no evidence or information "to believe there is foul play," according to Police Commander Steve Stocker. The August: Osage County actress suffered from bipolar disorder and at the time of her dissapearance her father expressed concerns that she was not taking her medication. "The family has stated that, after seeing the body, they still do not feel that Misty Upham committed suicide," said film-maker Tracy Rector, spokesperson for the Upham family.

Synagogue: Coroner visits collapsed building site, threatens mass burial

The Coroner court put up by the Lagos State government to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse of a building at the Synagogue Church of All Nations, SCOAN, Ikotun Lagos, yesterday visited the scene of the incident, requesting families of the victims to come for identification to avoid mass burial. The Coroner Judge, who was corroborating a request made by the state Chief Medical Examiner, Prof. John Obafunwa for the manifest of the people in the building when it collapsed maintained that the government will be left with no option than to give the deceased mass burial if there was no proper identification. 1000 B-Haram members nabbed in S-West – Serki Hausawa

SARKIN Hausawa of Lagos, Alhaji Sani Kabir, yesterday, told the Federal Government that northerners in the South West have arrested more than 1,000 members of the Boko Haram insurgents in parts of the South West. Speaking when the Arewa Council of Chiefs in the South West paid a visit to the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Alhaji Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, in Abuja, Alhaji Kabir said the arrests were made at different times. 18-yr-old kills husband in Bauchi

An 18-year-old housewife in Bauchi State has been arraigned at the Chief Magistrate’s Court 7, Bauchi, for allegedly killing her husband with hot water. Aisha Jibrin was said to have lost one of her front teeth as a result of beatings received from her husband, who accused her of going for an abortion without his consent. It was not certain at press time if the quarrel was over the issue of the paternity of the aborted baby or the abortion itself. She was said to have poured hot water on Ladan who was taking his bath, which led to his death in a hospital.

Joan Rivers’ autopsy results reveal cause of death

The New York City Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed the cause of death of the late comedienne, Joan Rivers. PA Photos The department confirmed that Rivers died following a complication during surgery that caused her brain to be starved of oxygen. In a statement issue by the department yesterday, Julie Bolcer stated: "OCME [Office of Chief Medical Examiner] has completed its investigation. The cause of Ms Rivers' death is anoxic encephalopathy due to hypoxic arrest during laryngoscopy and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with Propofol sedation for evaluation of voice changes and gastroesophageal reflux disease. "The manner of death is therapeutic complication. The classification of a death as a therapeutic complication means that the death resulted from a predictable complication of medical therapy." The late star had undergone the operation in August in order to investigate voice changes and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
