UNFPA Says 214 rescued girls are pregnant

Following the latest rescue of additional 234 women and children by the Nigerian Army from the Sambisa Forest in Borno State, indicated, yesterday, that a sizeable number of the rescued girls were visibly pregnant, even as unofficial reports put the latest number of pregnant girls in one of the camps in Borno as at last Saturday at 214. Giving this indication in Lagos, Executive Director, UNFPA, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, also disclosed that in the last one year, the organization had taken deliveries of over 16,000 pregnancies in the troubled North East part of the country.

Police sealed off the conference centre in Garland after the shooting Two gunmen have been shot dead after opening fire outside a conference on cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in a suburb of Dallas, US police say. They drove to the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland as the event was ending, and began shooting at a security officer before being killed by police. The bomb squad has been called in to search their vehicle for explosives.

Eugene Odo read a notice of impeachment against Chime in a sitting in the house early this morning May 4th. 13 other Assembly members supported the impeachment proceedings while 8 didn't and attempted to impeach the Speaker.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s finance minister, has called on the administration of the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to tame urgently the oil cartel holding the nation to ransom. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala The minister made the appeal speaking on May 3, 2015 in Abuja, PM News reports. Okonjo-Iweala refuted the claim by the oil marketers that the nation is owing them another N200.2bn, just after the government paid them N156bn. According to her, the outstanding amount is about N131bn billion.

IAAF/BTC Relays: Okagbare, others get plaudit

Technical Director of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Commodore Omatseye Nesiama, has praised the performance of the Nigerian 4x200m women’s team at the IAAF/BTC World Relays in Bahamas. Nigeria emerged ahead of all the participating nations like U.S.A, Jamaica, Bahamas, France, Germany, China and Ireland. “I had said it before now, that we could rely on these women to showcase our prowess in the relays and they have not disappointed me,” Nesiama said yesterday.

Until his death was a Morning Show Presenter for Classic Fm 97.3 . He died last night after a brief illness. He left behind a wife and two children. May his soul rest in peace, amen.

A dramatic production, ‘Hear Word’ which portrays true life stories of 20 different Nigerian women from various walks of life, opened this Friday, May 1, 2015 at the MUSON Centre in Lagos. The play, directed by Ifeoma Fafunwa, casts some of Nollywood’s most seasoned actresses like Joke Silva, Kate Henshaw, Bimbo Akintola, Elvina Ibru, Ufuoma Mcdermott, Kemi ‘Lala’ Akindoju, Taiwo Ajai-Lycett and Iretiola Doyle.

40 Killed In Wase Attack

The traditional ruler of Kumbun village of Wase local government area of Plateau State, Ponzhi Jessey Miri, yesterday alleged that over 40 persons from three Tarok communities of Kadarko, Kurmi and Wadata in the local government were killed when persons suspected to be soldiers invaded the communities. Speaking to our correspondent on phone yesterday, the traditional ruler said, “We are still in shock over what the military did to our people; as I speak to you, the corpses of our people killed still litter the communities; thousands of homes were burnt and some of our people were burnt in their homes including children and the aged”.
