Google has received 500,000 requests to delete links under 'right to be forgotten'

Google has approved fewer than half of received requests Google has deleted 170,000 links as part of Europe’s controversial “right to be forgotten” legislation, according to a company transparency report. Since setting up the deletion process on 29 May, Google has received more than 144,000 requests to “forget” almost 500,000 links, though it has only removed 41.8 per cent of them. Google has refused removal requests for more than 237,000 links. The published data revealed that more removal requests have come from France than any other European country, with 28,912 requests for just over 89 thousand URLs.

Somali car bomb attack toll rises to 13

SOMALI President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Monday that a car bomb which killed at least 13 people the day before was an act of "desperation" by Islamist Shebab insurgents. The attack took place on Sunday evening on a busy road leading to the government district, outside a popular cafe. "It shows the desperation of Al-Shebab because they are only hurting innocent civilians," Mohamud said in a statement, updating an initial toll after the blast of four. In addition, 18 others were wounded, some of them seriously, Mohamud added.

NIGERIA moves Monday to secure international support for its anti-insurgency campaign as it unveils its counter-terrorism strategy at the ongoing 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly Meeting (UNGA) in New York. The Nigerian mission to the United Nations (UN) working in liaison with Abuja was putting finishing touches to one of the country’s main presentations on terrorism to the global body at the weekend. Responding to The Guardian’s enquiry on Nigeria’s general concerns in this regard, high level officials at the Nigeria House disclosed that the Federal Government was poised to ask the UN to support its strategy as a more enduring instrument of curbing terrorism and most importantly, “stamping it out from its roots.”

Oscar Pistorius returns to court as sentencing starts

SOUTH African athlete Oscar Pistorius has returned to court for sentencing after being convicted of killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius was found guilty of the culpable homicide of Ms Steenkamp last month but he was cleared of murder. His psychologist was the first defence witness to speak at the sentencing hearing, which could last several days. Pistorius faces up to 15 years in jail, although Judge Thokozile Masipa may suspend the sentence or impose a fine.

Keshi, Enyeama beg Nigerians over loss to Sudan, as Eagles resume training

THE Super Eagles returned to the country yesterday morning after the shock 0-1 loss to host Sudan in a crucial Nations Cup qualifier in Khartoum, to a cold reception from Nigerians, which was expected, going by the passion the fans have for the game. An obviously disturbed Head Coach of the team, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi and Team Skipper, Vincent Enyeama, later took time off to assess the situation and agreed that despite the fact that all hopes were not lost in the battle for qualification, Nigerians deserved a better deal from the team. Keshi, who spoke first to a handful of sports journalists, said he was disappointed at the result like every other Nigerian, as he had hoped to use the game to kick-start Nigeria’s quest for a back to back Nations Cup trophy.

AFTER drubbing the Les Elephantes of Cote d’Ivoire 4-2 in their first group match on Saturday, the Super Falcons of Nigeria have vowed to take their next game against the Chipolopolo of Zambia with all the seriousness it deserves. The Coach Edwin Okon-led Falcons won their first game on the opening day of the 2014 African Women Championship (AWC) at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek, Namibia, Saturday evening, against a resilient Ivoirians side 4-2 with Desire Oparanozie scoring a brace. The victory came shortly after their male counterparts, Super Eagles, were beaten by Sudan in their 2015 AFCON qualifier.

Fuel tanker explosion kills 15 in Ibadan

No fewer than 15 persons lost their lives late Saturday night as a fully loaded petrol tanker exploded at Molete in Ibadan, Oyo State. The petrol tanker fell while trying to negotiate a bend. Several others who sustained varying degrees of injuries, including an 8-year-old girl, were rushed to the Accident and Emergency section of University College Hospital, Ibadan. The raging inferno which spread from Molete round about to Bode area of Ibadan lasted from about 8 pm Saturday night till about 3am, on Sunday, breezed past Prolek filling station before concerted efforts of the Oyo State Fire Service and well-meaning individuals could quench the inferno.

$9.3m arms deal: Presidency exonerates Oritsejafor, says he has no case to answer

The Federal Government on Sunday exonerated the President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor from the alleged involvement of his aircraft in the controversial $9.3m arms deal in South Africa. The Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan (Public Communication), Dr. Doyin Okupe, told Religious Affairs Correspondents in Abuja that Oritsejafor who is also the Founder of Word of Life Bible Church has no business with the matter.

The woman who eyewitnesses claim fell from tension wire while flying as a bird and turned into this woman pictured above at Cappa B-stop, Oshodi on Friday Oct. 10th  has died in hospital. Witnesses claim they saw a bird flying around the area around 12noon that Friday afternoon, then the bird hit a high tension clable and then transformed into a badly burnt woman. Policemen arrived the scene as a crowd gathered the supposed 'witch' and took her to the hospital..
