CAR Muslims hit by mob violence

Image
Dakar - Mob violence in Central African Republic's capital has escalated to the point where crowds slay Muslims and mutilate their bodies almost daily despite the presence of thousands of French and African peacekeepers. Bangui, the capital, is engulfed in an orgy of bloodshed and looting. "We are in a moment where immediate action is needed to stop the killings," Peter Bouckaert of Human Rights Watch told The Associated Press, calling for a full-fledged United Nations peacekeeping mission. "Otherwise the future of the Muslim community of this country will be gone." Muslims make up about 15% of Central African Republic's 4.6 million people. More than 800 000 people have fled their homes - about half of those from the capital, according to the United Nations. "There are some who don't want Muslims in this country," Prime Minister Andre Nzapayeke said on local radio Saturday.

Government To Decide if Justin Bieber Will Be Deported

Image
If you search the internet for more than 2 minutes, you’ll find that someone has started a petition regarding just about anything. It seems the popular petition in the news these days is one regarding  Baby singer Justin Bieber. I should also add that if you search the internet for less than 2 minutes, you are almost guaranteed to read something regarding the Biebs. For someone so young, not everyone loves Justin Bieber, though, and this is especially true in the United States. Who doesn’t love him, you ask? Well, his Los Angeles neighbor, for one, who is in the process of suing him for allegedly egging his house and causing upwards of $20,000 worth of damages. So many people, in fact, are so sick and tired of Justin Bieber that they have petitioned the White House with an online petition to do something about it . Just what do they want the President and Co. to do? For starters, they’d like the singer to be deported back to Canada. In case you weren’t aware, Justin Bie

Microsoft Takes Fight Against Cybercrime To New Level With Its Cybercrime Center

Image
Cybercrime is no joke , with security specialist McAfee estimating the cost of illegal cyber activity to be around $300 billion worldwide in 2013. That is more than enough money to feed the world’s poor! While the average person may not be all that concerned with cybercrime, Microsoft is taking on an aggressive stance against it. And why not? The company is probably one of the most “victimized”. Just how serious is Microsoft about fighting cybercrime? As serious as unveiling a new, state-of-the-art Cybercrime Center. If you think this is taking things too far, take a look at some statistics . 50% of online adults were cybercrime victims in the past year 20% of businesses – small and medium – have been targeted by cybercriminals So yes, Microsoft’s new Cybercrime Center is very much real and is based in the Redmond campus. From an article Microsoft itself released about its high tech facility, it seems that the Center is something right out of the movies – smart peop

Expandable Sponges Could Treat Gunshot Wounds

Image
The company RevMedx envisages medics treating future gun shot wounds in the same way that we repair a flat tyre. The Xstat dressing, is a new technology that is currently in development and was inspired by the foam that is used to repair a flat tyre. RevMedx’s co-founder, John Steinbaugh told Popular Science : “That’s what we pictured as the perfect solution: something you could spray in, it would expand, and bleeding stops. But we found that blood pressure is so high, blood would wash the foam right out.” To combat this problem, Xstat contains tiny, expandable medical sponges. The sponges are compressed and coated in a hemoststic agent called chitosan, just like regular medical sponges. Once placed in the wound, they expand within 15 seconds, helping to clot the blood and stop blood flow. The sponges are detectable on an X-ray and medics can remove them.

PillCam Finally Gets FDA Approval

Image
It has been almost a decade since Given Imaging first unveiled its idea of a miniscule snapshooter but finally it has received approval from the FDA for use in the U.S. Given Imaging understood that for a lot of people procedures like colonoscopies can be a very unpleasant experience. So it developed the PillCam Colon, a tiny camera in the form of a pill that the patient swallows. It can take a series of high-speed photos on its eight-hour journey through the digestive system and instead of having to wait for the pill to be ‘evacuated’, photos are transmitted directly to a device that the patient wears on their belt. Currently PillCam is available to people in 80 countries and now that the FDA has granted approval in the U.S, a possible 750,000 more people could benefit from this treatment.
