The Nigerian government announced the move in a bid to ensure that the Ebola virus does not spread The Federal Government has mandated that all primary and secondary schools in Nigeria should remain shut until further notice. The government stated that this was necessary to ensure that there is no further outbreak of the Ebola Viral Disease (EVD). The move was announced by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth and Students Matters, Comrade Jude Imagwe. The amount of time that the students would spend at home was not specified but it was stated that they would be on holiday until the country found a way to stop the current outbreak. Nigeria has now recorded 11 cases of the disease, the first being Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer who brought it into the country.

The nurse, who had contact with Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer, caused a stir on Wednesday when it was discovered that she had travelled to Enugu and had contact with at least 21 people during her unauthorized trip to the Southeastern city. However, Chukwu says the nurse has so far not developed the symptoms as of the time of her trip. “In Enugu yesterday, there were 21 secondary contacts with the nurse. But after investigations, there are only 6 secondary contacts now”, he said in Abuja on Thursday. “The nurse who is newly wedded had no symptoms of the disease when she travelled to Enugu, was transported back to Lagos in a special ambulance with her husband. Her husband is under quarantine now”.

A Nigerian man indicted in the United Kingdom (UK) has been accused of running an online “romance scam” that ensnared at least 30 women in Illinois, Missouri and elsewhere. He has been arrested in London, the US attorney’s office said Tuesday. Olayinka Ilumsa Sunmola, 31, pretended to be a current or retired member of the military, using information and photos he had stolen from real people on online dating sites, the indictment says. According to the St Loius Post-Dispatch, he wooed each woman for months, using flowers, stuffed animals, greeting cards and candy and promises that each “was his one true love, his sole love interest, and the woman with whom he intended to spend the rest of his life,” the indictment claimed. Once they were involved in a relationship, Sunmola began manufacturing fake emergencies that required ever-increasing amounts of money from his victims, prosecutors said. The victims were not named but lived in Illinois’ Bond County, St. Charles and St. Louis counties

CBN Building The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday directed deposit money banks in the country to re-introduce a charge of N65 per transaction on remote-on-us Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) cash withdrawals. The policy takes effect from September 1, 2014. Remote-on-us are transactions done by a card holder on another bank’s ATM. The central bank stated this in a circular addressed to all banks, dated August 13, 2014. A circular of the document titled: “Circular on the Introduction of Fees on Remote-on-Us ATM Withdrawal Transactions,” signed by the Director, Banking and Payment System Department, CBN, Mr. Dipo Fatokun, was posted on the regulator’s website yesterday. The CBN in collaboration with the Bankers’ Committee had in December 2012 transferred the payment of N100 remote-on-us ATM cash withdrawal transactions to issuing banks. This fee used to be shared between the acquirers, issuers and switches.

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday summoned the 36 state governors alongside their Commissioners for Health for an emergency meeting to discuss possible ways to curtail the spread of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). However, the governors opted to greet one another with clenched fists at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, reported the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). Ever since the health authorities began a sensitisation programme on the Ebola virus, Nigerians have been discouraged from shaking hands to avoid infection. The advisory has led to several Nigerians pointedly avoiding physical contact with their friends and associates and even compelled the Catholic Church to review the symbolic gesture during its Sunday mass. Nigeria has so far reported that 10 persons have been diagnosed with the deadly virus while two have died after a Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer, imported and died of the virus in Lagos. Minister of Information, Labaran Maku • Health C’ttee approves use of trial drug, Canada donates 1,000 doses to WHO The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, has disclosed that Nigerian medical experts and researchers are working in conjunction with their colleagues in the US to produce a vaccine for the Ebola virus. The minister, who made the statement while briefing State House correspondents after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, also revealed that the 198 persons who made secondary contact with the 10 primary contacts that were infected with Ebola by the index case had been traced and are currently under surveillance. Of the total, 21, who have been quarantined, are in Enugu. This is just as the National Health Research Ethics Committee, Nigeria, has approved the use of an experimental Ebola drug ZMapp for the treatment of patients infected with the virus. The Canadian Government also said Tuesday that it would donate 800 to 1,000 doses of the experimental drug

A nurse who had direct contact with Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian-American man that brought the Ebola disease to Nigeria, has fled from Lagos, where she was being quarantined to her hometown Enugu, Eastern Nigeria and it is estimated that she made physical contact with at least 20 persons, the Minister of information, Labaran Maku said Wednesday in Abuja. Maku said the nurse, who may have been infected as well as all the persons she established physical contact with have been placed under surveillance with the help of health personnel in the Enugu State government. So far, Nigeria has placed 189 persons under surveillance while 10 persons have so far been confirmed to have been infected by Ebola in the country. Of the 10 persons 3 are dead. Over 1000 persons have been killed by the disease in West Africa while there are over 2000 cases in the region. Nigeria said primary and secondary schools will remain on holidays until the disease is contained.
