South Africans perform first 'successful' penis transplant

The world's first successful penis transplant has been reported by a surgical team in South Africa. The 21-year-old recipient, whose identify is being protected, lost his penis in a botched circumcision. Doctors in Cape Town said the operation was a success and the patient was happy and healthy. The team said there was extensive discussion about whether the operation, which is not life-saving in the same way as a heart transplant, was ethical.

Sierra Leone VP Samuel Sam-Sumana 'goes into hiding'

Relations between President Ernest Bai Koroma (left) and Mr Sam-Sumana (right) have long been frosty Sierra Leone's Vice-President Samuel Sam-Sumana has gone into hiding while he seeks political asylum at the US embassy in the capital, Freetown. Mr Sam-Sumana told the BBC he and his wife fled their home after "a tip-off" that soldiers were surrounding it.

Their car collided with a lorry in the north-eastern city of Polokwane. Mr Chabane, 54, was minister for public service, a member of the governing ANC's national executive committee and a close associate of President Jacob Zuma.

Senegal set to replace DR Congo as hosts of African U-23s

Senegal have accepted a request from the Confederation of African Football (Caf) to host the 2015 African Under-23 Championship in December, replacing the Democratic Republic of Congo. It follows a meeting on Friday between the Senegal president, Macky Sall (pictured) and the Caf president Issa Hayatou. The tournament also serves as qualifiers for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

At least 50 people were reportedly hurt in the explosions at the Catholic church and Christ Church in the city's Youhanabad area. Violent protests erupted after the blasts, with large crowds already in the area to attend Sunday mass.

Femi Falana, counsel to some of the accused soldiers, said the soldiers’ actions have been justified as the military has started winning the war against the Boko Haram insurgents only after acquiring the necessary weaponry.

Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council has backed the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to lead the commission to conduct free, fair and transparent elections in March 28 and April 11. The northern rulers also said it would neither endorse the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan nor its All Progressives Congress opponent, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for president. The council’s position was made known in a statement on Saturday by the Etsu Nupe, Dr. Yahaya Abubakar.

25 Boko Haram insurgents die in Cameroon custody

Cameroon on Saturday said more than two dozen Boko Haram suspects died in custody late last year, but a government spokesman denied the country’s army was carrying out regular human rights abuses in its crackdown on the Nigerian Islamic extremist group. AFP reported that 25 suspects were found dead in their cell one day after being arrested in December, Communications Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary said in a press conference Friday evening.
