Image
Old sins, they say, have long shadows. This wise saying may have been responsible for the suspension yesterday, of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). A statement from the presidency, which announced his suspension, had accused him of “financial recklessness and misconduct, which are inconsistent with the administration’s vision of a Central Bank propelled by the core values of focused economic management, prudence, transparency and financial discipline.” The statement adds: “Being also deeply concerned about far-reaching irregularities under Mallam Sanusi’s watch, which have distracted the Central Bank away from the pursuit and achievement of its statutory mandate; and being determined to urgently reposition the Central Bank of Nigeria for greater efficiency, respect for due process and accountability, President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered the immediate suspension of Sanusi.”

Emefiele, CBN’s next helmsman

Image
Godwin Emefiele Not much is known about the Group Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer , Zenith Bank Plc, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, who has been nominated by President Goodluck Jonathan to succeed Mr. Lamido Sanusi as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in June. This is apparently because of his little public profile. Emefiele is an economic and  finance professional  with experience in banking and academics. His calm demeanour bodes well for the role of an economic manager and bank regulator, according to analysts. His nomination came few hours after the Presidency announced the suspension of Sanusi as the CBN governor, and appointed Mrs. Sarah Alade, a deputy governor at the central bank, as the acting governor. Emefiele, who took over from Jim Ovia at the helm of Zenith Bank, is credited with taking the bank to a higher level, with its rating as one of the top three banks in the country and ranked among 500 global brands. Al Qaeda link to shoe-bomb warning

Image
eive - A U.S. government warning this week to airlines about possible shoe bombs represents a credible threat linked to al Qaeda, officials told CNN. Recent intelligence points to tactics believed to be tied to al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and its master bomb-maker Ibrahim al Asiri, a federal law enforcement official said. Counterterrorism officials don't believe there is an active plot in the works. But the law enforcement source said the United States periodically receives information on attempts by those believed to have been trained by Asiri to try to develop bombs that could defeat screening systems. It's not a new threat, but one viewed as ongoing because they know the al Qaeda unit based in Yemen is constantly trying to improve its bombs. Another U.S. official said the Homeland Security Department would not have taken steps to warn carriers about flights bound for the United States had it not been credible.
