Rights Group Wants Amnesty International’s Chief investigated

A Human rights group, Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET) has called on security agencies to investigate the Country Director of Amnesty International, Mohammed .K. Ibrahim, the Kano State- born, but Zaria educated erstwhile career diplomat who was an official of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) and a diplomat in Libya. The group said the investigation becomes necessary following reports by the Nigerian office of Amnesty International under Ibrahim aimed at allegedly inciting sectarian crisis which could snowball into a full blown conflict.

Venezuela cuts power for four hours a day to save energy

   The drought has dried up the massive Guri Dam in Bolivar state seriously depleting the country's ability to generate energy. Venezuela is introducing power cuts of four hours a day from next week to deal with a worsening energy crisis. The cuts will last for 40 days as the country struggles under a severe drought limiting hydroelectric output. It is the latest setback to Venezuela's economy which has been hit by a sharp fall in the price of its main export, oil.

Barack Obama visit: UK more effective at fighting terror inside EU

  President Obama has been forthright about Britain's role in the EU The UK's ability to fight terrorism will be "more effective" if it sticks together with its European allies, US President Barack Obama has said. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Mr Obama said being in the EU magnified Britain's influence across the world. The president arrived for a three-day visit of the UK late on Thursday.

President Buhari has received needed intelligence for rescuing Chibok girls

– The United Nations representative discussed the rescue of the Chibok girls with President Buhari – She says that USA moved all needed information on finding missing girls to the Nigerian government – The UN promised to support Nigeria by all means, adding that it will not rest until the girls wouldn’t be freed President Muhammadu Buhari and the permanent representative to the United Nations Samantha Power The permanent representative to the United Nations Samantha Power has said that USA has shared all needed intelligence on finding the Chibok schoolgirls with President Muhammadu Buhari. Samantha Power was answering to the questions of the State House correspondents after the meeting with President Buhari.

MTN shows mixed bag of fortunes

JSE-listed and leading emerging market mobile operator, MTN, reported a mixed bag of results during its first quarter update yesterday, with subscribers decreasing 1.4 percent quarter on quarter, largely as a result of the protracted dispute with the Nigerian authorities. The company also saw its subscriber base decrease 1.7 percent in South Africa, but countries like Cameroon, Uganda and Ghana reported stronger subscriber growths of 3.1 percent, 7.8 percent and 4.6 percent respectively.
