On Thursday, the federal government raised the alarm that Boko Haram insurgents were planning to attack political rallies, worship centres and markets with camels, goats and donkeys laden with explosives. The government said intelligence reports indicated that the insurgents were also planning to use young men disguised as cobblers to attack Automated Teller Machines, restaurants and other places. Coordinator of the National Information Centre on the war against terrorism, Mr. Mike Omeri, at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, said security agencies and related organisations had been alerted to take necessary steps to forestall such attacks.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), yesterday, showed commitment to a smooth conduct of the February general elections, as it said all Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) had been printed and are ready for collection. The Senator Ibikunle Amosun Campaign Organisation (SIACO) has accused opposition political parties of purchasing Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) in a desperate attempt to manipulate the February general elections. According to SIACO, the move embarked on by the opposition parties is capable of disenfranchising the people of Ogun State during the elections. The organisation, in a statement by its Chairman, Media and Publicity Committee, Femi Sowoolu, said the purchase of the PVCs was illegal and can compromise the electoral process. A man identified as Ba’na, who is suspected to be manufacturing explosives for Boko Haram has been arrested in North-East Nigeria, a senior police officer told AFP on Tuesday.
