Nigeria's Olympic dream terminated tonite

Nigeria U23 team: www.soccernet.com.ng Nigeria’s U-23 team on Wednesday night failed to qualify for the finals of the men’s football event of the Rio Olympics as they lost 2-0 to Germany. A first-half strike from Lukas Klostermann and a late addition from Petersen was all the Germans needed to set up a final clash against hosts, Brazil. Brazil had earlier demolished Honduras in the other semi final contest. Nigeria, who were hoping to re-enact their Atlanta 1996 feat, when they emerged as the first African country to win Olympic gold in football, will now have to fight for Bronze in the losers’ final. It will be a big disappointment for Coach Samson Siasia who won silver in his last attempt at the Beijing Olympics and was hoping to go step higher in Rio

Olympian Simone Biles meets crush Zac Efron in Rio, turns into a giddy teenage fan

Image
Simone Biles is the superstar of the Olympics in Rio but for her, four gold medals and one bronze is nothing compared to meeting her crush, Zac Efron. “Just call me mrs. efron already.” So tweeted Simone Biles after she and the rest of the Final Five got to meet her crush, Zac Efron, on the “Today” show in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday. The winner of four Olympic gold medals and one bronze revealed last week that she’s nuts about Efron, to the point where she has a life-size cutout of him in her bedroom. And there he was, backstage, live, to visit with them, when the ladies thought they were simply going to do another interview. Instead of chatting, they went completely nuts. Riyad Mahrez rejects Arsenal and Chelsea to sign new deal at Leicester City

Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez has snubbed interest from Arsenal and Chelsea to sign a new deal until 2020 with the Foxes. The Algerian was crowned PFA player of the year last season after inspiring the Foxes to the Premier League title. Chelsea and Arsenal have both expressed interest in the 25-year-old and he admitted earlier this week that he’d leave the Foxes for ‘two or three clubs’. However, Leicester tweeted tonight to confirm that their star man had put pen to paper on a new deal that will see him stay at the KingPower stadium until 2020. (Baba Ahmed/Associated Press) BAMAKO, Mali — Protests in Mali’s capital against the arrest of a popular activist radio host have turned violent, leaving at least three people dead and several injured. These are the first major protests in Bamako since a military coup in 2012. Dozens took to the streets in Hamdallaye neighborhood Wednesday in support of radio personality Ras Bath. Activist Yelimady Konate says protesters knocked down the door of the courtroom where Bath was having his hearing. He says Bath was arrested Monday before hosting a radio talk show discussing Mali’s army. Protester Mama Camara says he saw three dead and several hurt at a clinic where he was looking for friends. Fact check: Leaked Clinton medical records -- real or fake?

Image
Donald Trump tested out a new line of attack against rival Hillary Clinton this week, arguing that she is physically unfit for the commander-in-chief role. At a Monday rally in Ohio, Trump -- who, at 70 years old, is nearly two years Clinton’s senior -- painted her as a candidate who “lacks the mental and physical stamina to take on ISIS and all of the many adversaries we face.” And he’s questioned her mental fitness before: Earlier this month at a New Hampshire campaign event, Trump called her a “totally unhinged person” and “unbalanced,” all while parroting back Clinton’s claim that she “short-circuited” while answering questions at a journalism conference. Conservative media outlets have only bolstered Trump’s claims with their coverage, disseminating photos online of Clinton’s purported medical records originally published by a now-deleted Twitter account. The medical documents, which were purported to be from Clinton’s physician, said she showed signs of “advancin

Donald Trump will receive first intelligence briefing Wednesday

Image
Donald Trump will receive his first intelligence briefing on Wednesday, officials familiar with the matter tell CBS News. The briefing is expected to be at a secure facility at the FBI in New York, likely at 26 Federal Plaza. The CIA indicated in May that the intelligence briefings for the nominees of each party would begin after the nominating conventions in July. The practice of briefing the nominees dates back to Harry Truman, who learned 12 days into his own presidency that the U.S. was working on the Manhattan Project. In 1952, he decided candidates should be given the option of receiving the briefings. Two killed in anti-government protest in eastern Congo

Image
A civilian and a police officer were killed in clashes in northeast Congo on Wednesday, police said, during a protest at government failure to stop massacres of civilians by rebel groups. The protests in the town of Beni added to tensions in Democratic Republic of Congo ahead of an election set for November in which the opposition has called for President Joseph Kabila to step down after his allotted two terms. Crowds jeered Prime Minister Augustin Matata Ponyo and two ministers on Tuesday when they came to assess security. On Wednesday, residents of Beni and surrounding towns again chanted against the government and army outside the mayor's office, voicing frustration in a region once considered a political stronghold for the government. In the latest incident, around 50 were killed by suspected Ugandan rebels on the outskirts of Beni on Saturday. More than 700 people have died in similar attacks on civilians since 2014. The government blames the attacks on the Allie

Neymar scores the fastest goal in Olympics history in Rio Games semifinal

Image
RIO DE JANEIRO — It was the dream start of dream starts for Brazil. And fittingly, its biggest star was in the middle of the moment. Neymar scored the opening goal of Brazil’s semifinal against Honduras at fabled Maracana Stadium just 14 seconds after kickoff on Wednesday. It the fastest goal in Olympic history. The Hondurans played the ball backward on the kickoff only to have Neymar intercept the lazy pass. The Barcelona star found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Luis Lopez and deftly got a touch on the ball before Lopez crashed into him in mid-air. Lopez stopped Neymar but he didn’t stop the ball, as it bounded slowly into the goal for a 1-0 Brazil lead. Neymar got the worst of the collision and stayed on the ground. He even had to be stretchered off the field but immediately got up as soon as he was brought across the touchline. Maracana cheered when Neymar ran to the center line and re-entered the game. Brazil won 6-0 to advance to the final.

Who’s the greatest Olympic athlete: Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps?

Image
Who’s the greatest Olympian ... the fastest man or the greatest swimmer? (MARTIN BUREAUMARTIN BUREAU/AFP) There's no doubt that Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps are the best in their fields... but who is the greatest overall? In this Daily News "That's Debatable" series, writers Ebenezer Samuel and Ian Powers take hacks at each other over who is the best Olympian. BOLT IS SIMPLY THE BEST Jamaica's Usain Bolt celebrates after he won the men's 100m Final. (JEWEL SAMAD/AFP/GETTY IMAGES) It doesn’t get any faster than Usain Bolt. Ever. In the history of humanity. In the one thing that just about any able-bodied human can do. It has been this way with metronomic consistency for three consecutive Olympic Games : In the three most basic events, there is Usain Bolt running away from everyone else. We saw it again on Sunday night, when American Justin Gatlin ran the seemingly perfect 100-meter dash, only to watch Bolt claim his third straight title anyw

The Cracked Integrity Of Donald Trump

Image
You have to say this for the crooked demagogues and reactionary populists of the American past: they may have stirred the bitter soup of nativist resentment with as much zeal as Donald J. Trump, but their family counselors did not take time out from politics to cruise the Aegean on a plutocrat’s yacht; their rhetorical counselors did not attempt, for decades, to instill fear in their employees through the most squalid sort of sexual terror; and their political counselors never worked in the interest of Slavic autocrats. Oh, Father Coughlin, we hardly knew ye! Day by day, news bulletin by news bulletin, the Trump campaign spirals to new depths of strategic confusion and moral chaos. On the escalators at Trump Tower, the direction is always down, down, down. At the center of the campaign is Trump himself, and, summoning the spirit of Sinatra’s most irritating song , he has made it clear that he will win or lose by doing it his way, by refusing to “pivot” or blandify his message
